The Genius Man Recruited by Google IDR 41 Trillion

HOLIDAY NEWS - Google is willing to spend US$ 2.7 billion or around Rp. 41 trillion to recruit Noam Shazeer. He is a genius scientist in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). 

Noam actually worked for Google for more than two decades as a software engineer, from 2000 to 2021 to be precise. However, the 48 year old man decided to leave Google. 

In 2021, Noam resigned because his request for Google to launch a chatbot he developed with his colleague, Daniel De Freitas, was not granted. 

Quoted from detikInet, Noam and Daniel then founded their own AI company called Character.AI. The company was a huge success and reached a valuation of around US$ 1 billion and around 20 million monthly active users. 

Last month, Google and Character.AI announced that Noam, Daniel, and several Character.AI employees would join DeepMind, Google's AI division. 

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google paid around IDR 41 trillion to license the Character.AI technology while bringing back Noam and his team. The licensing deal allows Google to immediately access Character.AI's intellectual property without having to wait for regulatory approvals that would be required if the company were purchased. 

Noam is considered very talented in the field of AI. Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, believes he can build an AI model equal to human intelligence. 

"If there's anyone I can think of in the world who might do it, it's him," Schmidt said. 

In 2017, Noam and Daniel worked together to create a chatbot called Meena. According to the Journal, Noam is so confident in Meena that he predicts that one day the Google search engine will replace it. However, Google executives considered it too risky to release Meena. 

Google tapped Noam, who raked in hundreds of millions of dollars in the deal, to be one of three people who will lead the company's efforts to develop the next version of Gemini, Google's AI model created to compete with rivals like OpenAI's ChatGPT.

HOLIDAY NEWS - Google rela menggelontorkan US$ 2,7 miliar atau sekitar Rp 41 triliun untuk merekrut Noam Shazeer. Dia merupakan ilmuwan jenius di bidang artificial intelligence (AI) atau kecerdasan buatan.

Noam sebenarnya pernah bekerja untuk Google selama lebih dari dua dekade sebagai software engineer, tepatnya sejak 2000 hingga 2021. Namun, pria berusia 48 tahun itu memutuskan keluar dari Google.

Pada 2021, Noam resign lantaran permintaannya agar Google meluncurkan chatbot yang ia kembangkan bersama koleganya, Daniel De Freitas, tidak dikabulkan.

Dikutip dari detikInet, Noam dan Daniel kemudian mendirikan perusahaan AI sendiri bernama Character.AI. Perusahaan itu sukses besar dan mencapai valuasi sekitar US$ 1 miliar dan sekitar 20 juta pengguna aktif bulanan.

Pada bulan lalu, Google dan Character.AI mengumumkan Noam, Daniel, dan beberapa karyawan Character.AI akan bergabung dengan DeepMind, divisi AI Google.

Menurut Wall Street Journal, Google membayar sekitar Rp 41 triliun untuk lisensi teknologi Character.AI sekaligus membawa kembali Noam dan timnya. Kesepakatan lisensi itu memungkinkan Google untuk segera mengakses kekayaan intelektual Character.AI tanpa harus menunggu persetujuan regulasi yang diperlukan jika perusahaan tersebut dibeli.

Noam memang dipandang sangat berbakat di bidang AI. Eric Schmidt, mantan CEO Google, yakin ia mampu membangun model AI setara kecerdasan manusia.

"Jika ada orang yang dapat saya pikirkan di dunia ini yang mungkin melakukannya, itu adalah dia," kata Schmidt.

Pada 2017, Noam dan Daniel bekerja sama membuat chatbot bernama Meena. Menurut Journal, Noam begitu yakin akan Meena sehingga ia memprediksi suatu hari nanti mesin pencari Google akan digantikannya. Namun, eksekutif Google menganggap terlalu berisiko untuk merilis Meena.

Google menunjuk Noam, yang meraup ratusan juta dolar dalam transaksi tersebut, untuk menjadi salah satu dari tiga orang yang akan memimpin upaya perusahaan untuk mengembangkan versi berikutnya dari Gemini, model AI dari Google yang dibuat untuk bersaing dengan rival seperti ChatGPT milik OpenAI.
