Elon Musk Predicts AI Will Beat Humans in 2 Years
- When Elon Musk predicted that artificial intelligence or AI that would be smarter and beat humans would emerge soon, or within the next 2 years, Baidu CEO Robin Li actually said that artificial intelligence that would beat humans would happen within 10 years.
According to CNBC International, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that artificial general intelligence or AGI would likely be available in 2026. Meanwhile, last January, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that AGI could be developed in the fairly near future.
Meanwhile, the CEO of one of the largest technology companies which is also one of the leading AI players in China, Baidu, signaled that Elon Musk and Sam Altman's statements were unrealistic.
"AGI is still a few years away. Right now, a lot of people are talking about AGI, (and) they're saying, 'maybe two more years, maybe five more years.'"I think (it) is still more than 10 years away," said Robin Li at the VivaTech conference in Paris, quoting CNBC International, Saturday (25/5/2024).
"The definition of AGI is that computers or AI can be as intelligent as humans, right? Or sometimes smarter. But we want AI to be as intelligent as humans. And the most advanced models currently are far from that. And how to achieve that level of intelligence? We don't know," he continued.
Then Li called for a faster pace of AI development. "(My) fear is that AI technology is not developing fast enough. Everyone is surprised at how fast technology has progressed in the last few years. But for me it's still not fast enough. "It's too slow," he said.
For the record, Baidu last year launched a ChatGPT-style chatbot called Ernie. Chinese companies including Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent are investing heavily in their own AI models, as are tech companies in the US.
Li said there is a big difference between technology development in the US and in China. In the US and Europe, he says, companies are focused on producing the strongest and most advanced foundation models. But in China, he noted the focus is on deploying the technology.
Despite this, Li said there is currently no killer application for AI.
"Today, in the mobile era, you have apps like Instagram, YouTube, TikTok. The daily active users are anywhere from 100 million to a billion users, right? And for AI native apps, we haven't seen that. We don't see that in the US. We don't saw it in China. "We don't see that in Europe," he said.
"What is the right form for a native AI application? What kind of native AI application can reach the 100 million user mark?" close him.
