- A total of eight US newspapers are suing ChatGPT creator OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging that the tech company has “stealed millions” of copyrighted news articles without permission or payment to train artificial intelligence chatbots.
Reported by AP News, The New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune, Denver Post and other newspapers filed the lawsuit on Tuesday in New York federal court. "We have spent billions of dollars gathering information and reporting the news in our publications," said a written statement by Frank Pine, executive editor of MediaNews Group and Tribune Publishing.
"We can't let OpenAI and Microsoft expand Big Tech's playbook by stealing our jobs to build their own businesses at our expense."
Other newspapers that are part of the lawsuit are MediaNews Group's Mercury News, the Orange County Register and the St. Louis Cardinals. Paul Pioneer-Press, as well as Tribune Publishing's Orlando Sentinel and the South Florida Sun Sentinel. All newspapers are owned by Alden Global Capital. Microsoft declined to comment Tuesday. OpenAI said in a statement that it takes great care in supporting news organizations. “While we were not previously aware of Alden Global Capital's concerns, we are actively engaged in constructive partnerships and discussions with many news organizations around the world to explore opportunities, discuss any concerns and provide solutions,” he said. The lawsuit is the latest against OpenAI and Microsoft filed in Manhattan federal court.

The companies have been battling a series of other copyright lawsuits from the New York Times, other media outlets, and best-selling authors such as John Grisham, Jodi Picoult, and George RR. Martin. The companies also face a series of other lawsuits in San Francisco federal court.
Tech companies argue that leveraging publicly accessible internet content to train their AI systems is protected by the “fair use” doctrine in American copyright law. In some cases, they avoid potential legal challenges by paying organizations for the content. (*)

Dilansir AP News, The New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune, Denver Post dan surat kabar lainnya mengajukan gugatan pada hari Selasa di pengadilan federal New York.
