In the list, Singapore and Zurich have topped the world's most expensive cities to live in according to the Worldwide Cost of Living survey conducted by the EIU. This survey marks the ninth time in 11 years that Singapore has topped the EIU's list of the most expensive cities in the world.
Meanwhile Zurich moved up to number one after previously being in sixth place in 2022. The survey, conducted from August 14 to September 11, covered 173 cities, comparing more than 400 prices for more than 200 products and services.
Singapore is placed at the top due to the high costs of groceries, alcohol, clothing and private car ownership.
Then for Zurich it was triggered by an increase in the prices of household goods and recreational activities.
The survey revealed a trend of cities facing rising prices due to inflation, with prices of more than 200 goods and services increasing by 7.4 percent year-on-year. This has decreased from the previous year but is still much higher than the trend from 2017 to 2021.
New York City, which shared the top spot with Singapore last year, now shares third place with Geneva.
Two other US cities are on the list of the 10 most expensive cities in the world to live in, namely Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Although inflation in Asia is lower than other regions, apart from Singapore which is ranked first, another Asian city made it into the top 10, namely Hong Kong, which is ranked fifth.
In particular, Western Europe stands out for food and clothing inflation, coupled with currency appreciation.
The four European cities that made the list are Zurich (at number 2), Geneva (at number 4), Paris (at number 7) and Copenhagen (at number 8).
Then Tel Aviv is ranked in the top 10 most expensive places to live, equal to Copenhagen in 8th place, but this survey was conducted before the Israel-Hamas war.

Melalui survei ini menandai kesembilan kalinya dalam 11 tahun Singapura menduduki puncak daftar EIU sebagai kota termahal di dunia.
Sementara Zurich naik peringkat nomor satu setelah sebelumnya berada di posisi keenam pada tahun 2022. Survei yang dilakukan mulai 14 Agustus hingga 11 September ini mencakup 173 kota, membandingkan lebih dari 400 harga untuk lebih dari 200 produk dan layanan.
