Google Boss Confession of Sins Regarding 2023 Mass Layoffs
- At the beginning of this year, Google announced massive layoffs affecting 12,000 employees. That figure is equivalent to 6% of Google employees spread throughout the world.
This decision was made in response to the economic uncertainty that is 'hitting' the technology industry.
Recently, Google CEO Sundar Pichai opened up about the decision to cut employees. He said the decision to lay off people was a difficult thing to do, but crucial to guarantee the company's future. However, Pichai admitted that Google should have handled layoffs better, quoted from Android Headlines, Friday (16/12/2023).
After almost a year since the announcement of the layoffs, Pichai finally opened up at an annual internal meeting with employees. He received a question from an employee about the impact of layoffs on growth, profits and losses and morale at Google.
"Of course it has a big impact on the morale part," Pichai said in response to employees' questions.
He said this was reflected in various comments on internal employee discussion forums, as well as the input he received. In a survey held called 'Googlegeist', Google employees were able to rate their satisfaction with several areas. These include leadership, compensation, products, tolerance, and company values.
Pichai said employees expressed strong opinions about the mass layoffs that affected their colleagues.
"This situation has never happened in the 25 years we have been around," said Pichai.
Furthermore, Pichai was also asked whether the company should have handled layoffs better. For this one, Pichai admitted completely and did not make any excuses.
"Of course. These layoffs are not the right thing to do. I think, of course we should have done it differently," he explained.
The mass layoffs carried out in January this year had an impact on the Google team and several of its derivative products. For example, the Waze team, Fuchia OS, and the Area 120 incubator.
Since mass layoffs in early January, Google has also made cuts on a smaller scale in stages. Most recently, around 20 employees on the Google Assistant team were also cut.

"Tentu saja dampaknya besar pada bagian moral," kata Pichai menjawab pertanyaan karyawan. Ia mengatakan hal itu tercermin dari berbagai komentar di forum diskusi internal karyawan, serta masukan yang ia terima. Dalam sebuah survey yang digelar bernama 'Googlegeist', karyawan Google bisa memberikan penilaian soal kepuasan mereka terhadap beberapa area. Antara lain kepemimpinan, kompensasi, produk, toleransi, dan nilai perusahaan.
Pichai mengatakan para karyawan memberikan opini yang keras terhadap PHK massal yang berdampak pada kawan sejawat mereka. "Situasi ini tak pernah terjadi dalam 25 tahun kita berdiri," kata Pichai.
Selanjutnya, Pichai juga ditanya apakah perusahaan seharusnya menangani PHK dengan lebih baik. Untuk yang satu ini, Pichai mengaku sepenuhnya dan tak membuat dalih apa-apa.
"Tentu saja. PHK ini bukan hal yang benar untuk dilakukan. Saya rasa, tentu saja seharusnya kami melakukannya secara berbeda," ia menjelaskan. PHK massal yang dilakukan pada Januari tahun ini berdampak pada tim Google dan beberapa produk turunannya. Misalnya saja tim Waze, Fuchia OS, dan inkubator Area 120.
Sejak PHK massal pada awal Januari, Google juga melakukan pemangkasan dalam skala lebih kecil secara bertahap. Terbaru, sekitar 20 karyawan di tim Google Assistant juga dipangkas.
