Google Play Store Removes Apps That Help Boycott Pro-Israel Companies (News.com.au)
- An app called NoThanks which told its users which companies support Israel was removed from the Google Play app store.
The Twitter account @NoThanksBoycott announced that its mobile app was temporarily suspended from the Google Play app store because its description mentioned Israel.
"This application has been suspended from the Play Store because of this sentence (description). I have removed it in the new update and the Play Store will review it and release it again," explained the account on Thursday, November 30, 2023.
In its app description, NoThanks writes "Welcome to NoThanks, here you can see whether the product in your hand supports the killing of children in Palestine or not. All you have to do is scan the barcode or write the serial number in the search bar."
The @NoThanksBoycott app was first announced on November 7th.
At the time of the release, the creator said, "I am a Palestinian developer and I created an app that will help everyone in the boycott movement, all you have to do is scan the product barcode and it will tell you, the app will be released soon on Android and iOS."
In another post, the app shared a video showing someone using NoThanks to scan a barcode while in a store. He did this to see whether the product he bought supported Israel.
"Download the app and help us by boycotting products that support this massacre," the post explained.
On November 29, NoThanks said it had received more than 100,000 downloads in the Google Play app store.
Following its removal from the Google Play app store this week, @NoThanksBoycott announced that they would share an "apk version" of the app on their Telegram channel.
The removal of the NoThanks app from the Google Play app store has sparked controversy.
Some people say that the removal is a form of silencing free speech. Meanwhile, others said the removal was appropriate as the app promoted violence perpetrated by Hamas.

- Sebuah aplikasi bernama NoThanks yang memberi tahu penggunanya perusahaan apa saja yang mendukung Israel dihapus dari Google Play app store.
Akun Twitter @NoThanksBoycott mengumumkan bahwa aplikasi selulernya itu ditangguhkan sementara dari Google Play app store karena deskripsinya yang menyebutkan Israel.
"Aplikasi ini telah ditangguhkan dari play store karena kalimat (deskripsi) ini. Saya telah menghapusnya di pembaruan baru dan play store akan meninjaunya dan merilisnya lagi," jelas akun tersebut pada Kamis, 30 November 2023.
Dalam deskripsi aplikasinya, NoThanks menulis "Selamat datang di NoThanks, disini Anda dapat melihat apakah produk di tangan Anda mendukung pembunuhan anak-anak di Palestina atau tidak. Yang harus Anda lakukan hanyalah memindai kode batang atau menulis nomor seri di bilah pencarian."
Aplikasi @NoThanksBoycott pertama kali diumumkan pada tanggal 7 November.
Saat rilis, pembuatnya mengatakan, "Saya seorang developer Palestina dan saya membuat aplikasi yang akan membantu semua orang dalam gerakan boikot, yang harus Anda lakukan hanyalah memindai kode batang produk dan itu akan memberi tahu Anda, aplikasi akan dirilis segera di Android dan iOS."
Dalam postingan lainnya, aplikasi tersebut membagikan video yang menunjukkan seseorang menggunakan NoThanks untuk memindai sebuah barcode atau kode batang saat berada di dalam toko. Hal itu dia lakukan untuk melihat apakah produk yang dia beli tersebut mendukung Israel.
"Unduh aplikasinya dan bantu kami dengan memboikot produk yang mendukung pembantaian ini," jelas postingan tersebut.
Pada tanggal 29 November, NoThanks menyatakan telah menerima lebih dari 100.000 unduhan di Google Play app store.
Menyusul penghapusannya dari Google Play app store minggu ini, @NoThanksBoycott mengumumkan bahwa mereka akan membagikan "versi apk" aplikasi tersebut di saluran Telegram mereka.
Penghapusan aplikasi NoThanks dari Google Play app store telah menimbulkan kontroversi.
Beberapa orang mengatakan bahwa penghapusan tersebut merupakan bentuk pembungkaman kebebasan berbicara. Sementara itu, yang lain mengatakan bahwa penghapusan tersebut tepat karena aplikasi tersebut mempromosikan kekerasan yang dilakukan Hamas.
