Mark Zuckerberg Bites His Finger Because of Bees
HOLIDAY NEWS - Global technology giants such as Amazon, Microsoft and Meta are racing to find nuclear energy sources for artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and cloud computing. However, their efforts encountered various obstacles, including from bees.
The race by technology companies to build AI technology platforms requires the support of new data centers designed specifically for this technology. AI data centers also require a larger energy supply than ordinary data centers.
Therefore, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft are reportedly aggressively looking for nuclear power plants to provide as an energy source for the data centers they plan to build.
Meta, the parent of Facebook, Instagram, and Amazon, reportedly encountered obstacles in its project to build an AI data center next to a nuclear power plant.
The Financial Times reported that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said one of the obstacles to the project was the sighting of rare bees on the project grounds. In the United States, bees are classified as a species that is vulnerable to extinction, partly due to the use of pesticides.
Amazon's hyperscale data center development plans are also stalled. The United States Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) rejected Amazon's plan to build a data center next to a nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania.
The reason FERC rejected Amazon's plan was the potential impact of Amazon's data center electricity consumption on the quality of service for other electricity customers in the area. It is feared that local residents will experience more power outages and will have to pay higher electricity costs because Amazon's data centers are hungry for energy.
On the other hand, Microsoft's giant data center project is running smoothly. The company plans to revive a nuclear power plant that is no longer operating as a data center energy source.
Mark Zuckerberg Gigit Jari Gara-Gara Lebah
