Not Google, Unknown Browser Accused of Cheating
HOLIDAY NEWS - Monopoly cases on browser platforms occurred in the European Union. However, it is not Google's popular Chrome platform, this time it is Microsoft's Edge that is being accused of unfair behavior.
In fact, Edge is much less well known than Google Chrome. Three rival browsers and a group of web developers wrote to the European Commission regarding Edge cheating.
Each Vivaldi, Waterfox, Wavebox and Open Web Advocacy.
They stated that Microsoft was making an unfair advantage on Edge, quoted by Reuters, Friday (4/10/2024).
Previously, the Norwegian browser, Opera, had also sued the European Commission. The reason is because the European Commission exempted Edge from the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
In their letter to the European Commission, all companies and advocacy institutions supported Opera's steps. They also mentioned Edge as the default browser on all Windows computers.
"It is important for the Commission to reconsider its [Edge browser] position," said the letter on September 17, 2024.
"Unfair practices are allowed to continue in the Windows ecosystem with Edge, without addressing screen options on mobile devices," they added.
According to them, nothing can match Edge's superiority on Windows devices. Including because of the important role of the browser on a Windows PC.
They also said the pop up message that Edge displayed was misunderstood. In terms of features of competing browsers that differentiate them from Microsoft products.
Meanwhile both the European Commission and Microsoft declined to comment.
