Losing Competition French Media Sues Google for $1.1 Billion Over Online Advertising

PARIS - Seven French media groups plan to sue Google and seek more than 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) in damages over alleged anti-competitive practices in online advertising, according to a report on Friday. 

Professional information service Mind Media said the seven groups, representing a total of 22 companies, had initiated or were about to initiate legal action. 

The move comes after France's competition watchdog fined Google 220 million euros in June 2021 for favoring its own services in the online advertising sector. 

"Google has clearly been found guilty of anti-competitive behavior. French competition authorities have stated that Google has for years favored its own solutions over those of its competitors," said Figaro CEO Marc Feuillee, quoted in the report. 

Feuillee said he believed his group was "a victim of the technological system we use" and was therefore seeking "compensation."

The plaintiffs are Le Figaro, SIPA/Ouest-France, Prisma Media, Les Echos-Le Parisien, Adevinta/Leboncoin, CMA Media and sports daily L'Equipe. 

An initial hearing to set a trial date took place in early September at a Paris commercial court, and the process could last two to three years. 

Google's advertising practices have also been the subject of investigations or legal proceedings in the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the United States. 

In early September, the UK's competition watchdog concluded in interim findings that Google used "anti-competitive practices... which it believes may have harmed thousands of publishers and advertisers in the UK". 

Google's Vice President of Global Advertising, Dan Taylor, argued that the case was "based on a misinterpretation" of the sector.

PARIS - Tujuh kelompok media Prancis berencana menuntut Google dan meminta ganti rugi lebih dari 1 miliar euro ($1,1 miliar) atas dugaan praktik anti-persaingan dalam periklanan daring, menurut sebuah laporan pada hari Jumat (20/9).

Layanan informasi profesional Mind Media mengatakan ketujuh kelompok yang mewakili total 22 perusahaan, telah memulai atau akan memulai tindakan hukum.

Langkah tersebut dilakukan setelah pengawas persaingan Prancis mendenda Google sebesar 220 juta euro pada Juni 2021 karena lebih mengutamakan layanannya sendiri di sektor periklanan daring.

"Google jelas-jelas terbukti bersalah atas perilaku antipersaingan. Otoritas persaingan Prancis telah menyatakan bahwa Google selama bertahun-tahun lebih mengutamakan solusinya sendiri daripada solusi pesaingnya," kata CEO Figaro Marc Feuillee, yang dikutip dalam laporan tersebut.

Feuillee mengatakan yakin kelompoknya adalah "korban dari sistem teknologi yang kami gunakan" dan karena itu mencari "kompensasi".

Pada awal September, pengawas persaingan usaha Inggris menyimpulkan dalam temuan sementara bahwa Google menggunakan "praktik anti-persaingan usaha... yang diyakini dapat merugikan ribuan penerbit dan pengiklan di Inggris Raya".

Wakil Presiden Iklan Global Google, Dan Taylor, berpendapat bahwa kasus tersebut "didasarkan pada interpretasi yang keliru" atas sektor tersebut.
