LONDON - Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Meta, criticized other tech companies developing artificial intelligence (AI) tools, saying they were trying to "invent God."
Zuckerberg, whose own company offers a variety of AI products, emphasized that Meta's approach is different from others. He claims that Apple, Google and OpenAI, for example, are creating AI tools that are not suited to their users' needs.
"I feel very disappointed when people in the technology industry talk about building real AI," Zuckerberg said as reported by The Sun, Sunday (30/6/2024).
"It's like they think they're creating God or something. And like, that's not what we're doing."
Zuckerberg said that Meta is focused on developing AI that helps people in everyday life, such as Meta and Ray-Ban glasses that feature a floating screen in the wearer's field of vision. He envisions the product being able to include a full holographic display but still look like regular glasses.
Zuckerberg also discussed Llama 3, Meta's newest AI model, which he said is "close to matching the best models out there."
Zuckerberg's statement raises questions about the ethics and goals of AI development.
Should AI be limited to helping humans in everyday life, or should it be used for more ambitious goals, such as creating more sophisticated technology? This question still needs to be studied and discussed further.
