1️⃣. Qurban is not the "official name" to refer to this worship. In fiqh and other terms, sacrifice is called Udhiyah. The original name means Dhuha time.

Meanwhile, qurban itself, which is embedded in the oral language of some Indonesian people, is a term that comes from the word qurbun, which means close.

2️⃣. Even though the law on qurban is associated with the story of the prophet Ibrahim's sacrifice, in fact the first qurban was carried out long before his time, peace be upon him.

Qurban is mentioned in the Qur'an as having been carried out initially by two of the sons of the Prophet Adam, alaihissalam, namely Habil and Qabil.

3️⃣. Qurban, in the sense of slaughtering animals for worship, turns out to be not only done by Muslims, but also by people of other religions. Jews, for example, carry out a sacrificial procession called Kurbanot.

The only difference is that sacrifice in other religions does not require slaughtering a particular animal, it can include a variety of animals, even vegetables and fruit.

4️⃣. The Prophet ﷺ, who was described as living in poverty, almost never saved money when it came to slaughtering qurbani. He sacrificed dozens or even hundreds of animals.

A unique fact is that during the Wada' Hajj he sacrificed with 100 camels. Rasul slaughtered 63 of them and Ali bin Abi Talib slaughtered 37 of them.

The number 63 is like a sign of the age of 63 years from the age of the Prophet ﷺ who died not long after.

5️⃣. Rasulullah ﷺ when slaughtering his qurban often included his people who were unable to sacrifice. This shows his love for this people as well as a reminder of the importance of this worship.

6️⃣. The animals that are most evenly distributed in sacrificial services are goats and their types. There is almost no area where Muslims are absent from slaughtering goats.

Meanwhile, the animal with the most limited distribution is the camel, where only a few Arab countries use it as a sacrificial animal.

7️⃣. Scientifically, slaughtering a sacrificial animal does not torture the animal. Several articles state that based on research by Prof. Wilhelm and Dr. Hazim from Hannover University, Germany, proved that animals slaughtered using the Islamic method do not feel pain and the meat meets GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) principles.

This is because Islam recommends that everyone who slaughters their sacrificial animal must use a very sharp knife and quickly.

8️⃣. Did you know? In the past, there was a unique custom in some Muslim communities during Eid al-Qurban. Namely, there are some people who will wear turbans on their heads with special patterns during Eid al-Adha.

They are people who are capable of sacrificing who wear certain turbans which show that they have the ability to sacrifice themselves.

So this gives a subtle message to neighbors and people around them, that there is no need to send sacrificial meat to them.

So that sacrificial meat can be prioritized to be given to the poor who need it. What about now?

Understanding Qurban

What is Sacrifice or Sacrifice? Sacrifice or Qurban (in Arabic الأضحية,التضحية) literally means slaughtered animal. The worship of qurban (sacrifice) is the worship of slaughtering livestock which is one part of the Islamic teachings prescribed in the Koran.
Apart from the type of animal, the sacrificial service also only occurs on certain days. The sacrificial service in Islam is carried out at predetermined times such as Eid al-Adha and Tarshrik (11, 12 and 13 Dzulhijjah) with the aim of getting closer to Allah SWT.

THE LAW OF QURBAN IN THE QURAN AND HADIST

The law of sacrificial worship is the sunnah sukakadah, or sunnah which is highly emphasized. Rasulullah saw said:
God willing ْ يُضَحِّيَ فَلْيُمْسِكْ عَنْ شَعْرِهِ وَأَظْفَارِهِ
"If you have meru'yah (seen) the crescent moon of Zulhijah, and someone among you wants to cut a sacrificial animal, then let him refrain from cutting its hair and nails." (HR. Muslim)
His expression "and someone among you wants to slaughter a sacrificial animal" shows that the law of the sunnah is not obligatory. Because if it were obligatory, of course it would not only be associated with people who want to sacrifice only.
However, for those who have leeway there is great emphasis on sacrificing, and it is makruh to abandon it. The Messenger of Allah once gave a strong warning to people who were able but did not want to sacrifice. His words:
مَنْ كَانَ عِنْدَهُ سَعَةً فَلَمْ يُضَحِّ فَلَا يَقْرَبَنَّ مُصَل َّانَا
"Whoever has leeway but does not sacrifice, then do not approach the place where our prayers (Eid) are held." (HR. Ibn Majah; Hasan)
Due to this strong warning, there are some scholars who declare that sacrifice is obligatory for people who can afford it.
