DuckDuckGo Will Allow Users to Access AI Chatbots for Free

- Privacy-focused search engine, DuckDuckGo will now allow its users to anonymously access popular artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT (based on GPT-3.5), Anthropic's Claude 3 Haiku, Mixtra 8x7B, and Meta Llama 3 for free. This new feature aims to help people harness the power of generative AI, while also addressing privacy concerns users may have when using these chatbots.
Reported by Live Mint, this new feature called AI Chat is free to use with a daily limit and can be turned off if necessary. DuckDuckGo said it also plans to introduce paid tiers with higher daily usage limits and more AI models.
Explaining the rationale behind adding new AI features to DuckDuckGo, the company said, “We believe people should be able to use the Internet and other digital tools without feeling like they have to sacrifice their privacy in the process.”
“So we meet people where they are, developing products that add a layer of privacy to the everyday activities they do online. That's our holistic approach – first with search, then browsing, email, and now with generative AI through AI Chat.”
How to use DuckDuckGo's AI chatbot
Users can experience the new AI chat feature anonymously by going to duck.ai or duckduckgo.com/chat. Once on the AI search page, users can select their preferred generative AI model and start using it like any other chatbot.

The main difference here is that these chats are completely anonymous and cannot be traced back to individual users. On the other hand, if it's tracked, it looks like the chat request came from DuckDuckGo, not the user. Users can also tap the fire button to delete recent chats, similar to a traditional DuckDuckGo search.
DuckDuckGo said it does not store or store any chats and has signed an agreement with the AI company to delete any recorded chats within the next 30 days. Additionally, AI chatbots will not be used by these companies to train or improve their AI models.
