XL Axiata and Indosat are reviewing cooperation with satellite companies such as Starlink. What is Starlink's response?

Starlink legal team Krishna Vesa said that Starlink is committed to providing high-speed internet services. "We are ready to work with any party to improve efficiency and service to consumers," he told the media after a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) activity with the Business Competition Supervisory Commission or KPPU at the KPPU office in Jakarta, Wednesday (29/5).

Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison SVP Head of Corporate Communications Steve Saerang stated that the company does not see Starlink as a competitor. According to him, satellite technology has great potential to improve connectivity and reach more people in remote and outermost regions of Indonesia.
Therefore, Indosat focuses on collaborating with satellite providers, such as Starlink. It is hoped that cooperation can create a healthy telecommunications industry climate.

Head of External Communications XL Axiata Henry Wijayanto also said that the presence of Starlink makes the competitive map for the internet data services business in the future even more challenging. However, the technology offered enriches services in Indonesia.
"Therefore, we must also be able to explore potential positive impacts, such as collaboration on the presence of new technology," said Henry to Katadata.co.id, Tuesday (28/5).

XL Axiata hopes that there will be a balanced implementation of regulations from the government, thereby creating a level playing field between Starlink and existing cellular operators.

Henry gave an example of the imposition of PNBP in the telecommunications sector such as operator rights fees (BHP), Universal Service Obligation (USO), telecommunications usage rights fees (BHP Tel), and others on Starlink.

Apart from that, XL Axiata hopes that the government can facilitate Starlink to be required to collaborate with operators for business to customer or B2C and business to business aka B2B services.

He also hopes that the government will control Starlink's tariff structure. That way, this American company does not threaten the sustainability of the national telecommunications business. "In essence, we really hope that the government can act as an arbiter to ensure that there is an equal playing field," Henry added.
