- Project Astra is one of the artificial intelligence (AI) products announced at Google's annual developer conference, otherwise known as Google I/O 2024.
Project Astra is an AI model that can describe various objects targeted by a smartphone camera or Google Glass smart glasses, directly, in real time, via voice. Simply put, this AI seems to be able to "see" through the cellphone camera. Unfortunately sales of Google Glass were stopped because it didn't really captivate users. Even so, Google seems to be reviving its smart glasses. Because the company uses it to promote the capabilities of Project Astra.
Google co-founder Sergey Brin also said that the concept of Google Glass is still "pretty cool", as quoted by media outlet Bloomberg. On the same occasion, Brin admitted that his party launched Google Glass too early. In fact, the smart glasses could actually be released at the right time. "Unfortunately we messed up the timing (of the launch)," said Brin.
"I wish I could time it a little better," he continued.
Brin then re-explained the concept of Google Glass. This device carries the concept of "hands-free" aka no hand touch, allowing users to interact with AI flexibly without needing to navigate it manually. "It feels awkward to wear it while holding a cell phone," he said.
Not only Sergey Brin, Google CEO Sundar Pichai also hinted at Google Glass's "comeback".
In an interview with media outlet CNBC, Pichai teased the possible return of devices integrated with Project Astra. It is strongly suspected that the device in question is smart glasses.
If Google Glass is really re-released, then these smart glasses will be a complement to Project Astra in the future.
Google Glass was first showcased to the public at Google I/O 2012. These smart glasses were then released to a number of selected testers in 2013 and commercialized in 2014.
Google Glass supports voice or manual commands via the touchpad available on the side of the device. Some of the tasks that can be carried out are sending text messages, and taking photos or videos.
However, this device did not attract consumer interest so it was considered a failure in the market. Some of the factors are the lack of product sales value, short battery life, poor camera quality and inadequate voice recognition. In the end, this technology giant stopped selling Google Glass in March 2023, compiled by KompasTekno from Google's support page, Tuesday (21/5/2024).
