Kaffiyeh or kufiya is actually not just an ordinary square-shaped cotton scarf. The iti scarf has a complex history and meaning to the Palestinian struggle.

The kufiya scarf originally came from Mesopotamia in 3,100 BC and was worn by the Babylonians and Sumerians. The word kaffiyeh comes from the Kufa area in Iraq which means 'from the city of Kufiah'.
Kufiya is usually made of cotton and is used by Bedouin tribes in the desert. This scarf provides protection from heat and sandstorms.
Arab countries make kaffiyeh one of their cultural heritage, from Palestine, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, to Iraq. However, each country has different symbols, colors and meanings of kaffiyeh.

The colors red and white are usually associated with Jordan, while Palestine is reflected in the black and white kafiyyeh. Usually, the kaffiyeh is used by Palestinians as a symbol of resistance and solidarity.

Not only black and white, Palestine also has classic kaffiyehs with three main patterns, namely mesh or fishing nets, thick routes and olive leaves. The mesh pattern is the most famous because it resembles the houndstooth pattern, which symbolizes Palestinian sailors and Mediterranean sailors. Meanwhile fishing is an important aspect of Palestinian life, especially in Jaffa and Haifa.

The route pattern and thick lines represent trade routes of natural and cultural exchange. Meanwhile, the wavy olive leaf pattern is a symbol of perseverance, strength and resilience. The olive tree is a symbol of the bond between the people and the land of Palestine, although nowadays there are not many olive trees to be seen there.
