- Microsoft founder Bill Gates believes that the trend of artificial intelligence (AI) could take over human jobs. However, there are three safest jobs that are not affected.
The joke came in a recent podcast conversation with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, whose company is responsible for the AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT.
For years, Gates has stated that the three best career paths for new graduates are in the fields of alternative energy, health biosciences, and the development of artificial intelligence itself, but it's worth noting 'billionaire philanthropist' is not on that list.
"I could even lose my job," said Gates on his podcast, 'Unconfused Me with Bill Gates', reported by Dailymail, Monday (15/4/2024).
He admitted that he was very skeptical about AI's capabilities. Gates expressed his own confusion about how large language models AI like ChatGPT can process and emulate complex textual information.
"When OpenAI built GPT-1, they didn't have a deep understanding of how it worked or why it worked," Altman acknowledged.
According to Altman, his company is now pursuing 'interpretability research' to further untangle all the intricacies and complexities that machine learning and AI training has taken on alone, outside the oversight of the initial coder.
Gates has increasingly focused his podcast and blog, 'Gates Notes', on the future promise and ethical dimensions of AI. "Now we have a better understanding of what kinds of jobs AI can do on its own and what jobs AI will help with," Gates said in a post on his predictions for 2024.
"It's clearer than ever how AI can be used to improve access to education, mental health, and more," said Gates.
