- Venus is the second planet from the Sun and the closest planet to Earth. This planet is similar in size and mass to Earth, so it is often referred to as "Earth's twin".
However, behind these similarities, Venus holds many interesting facts that not many people know.

1. Hottest Planet in the Solar System
Venus is a very hot planet even though it is not close to the Sun. This is because Venus's dense atmosphere contains around 96.5 percent carbon dioxide gas.
These gases act like a blanket that traps heat from the Sun and makes the temperature on the surface of Venus very high, reaching around 462 degrees Celsius.
2. Venus' rotation is longer than its revolution
One Venusian day (its rotation period) takes 243 Earth days, even longer than a Venusian year (its revolution period), which only takes 225 Earth days.
Additionally, because Venus rotates very slowly, sunrise to sunset takes about 117 Earth days. What's more interesting, on Venus, the sun will rise in the west and set in the east, the opposite of Earth.
3. The Sun Rises in the West and Sets in the East
Unlike Earth, Venus actually rotates in the opposite direction to the Sun, this is called retrograde rotation. This means, on Venus, the Sun rises in the west and sets in the east.
One possibility of this happening is due to a collision with an asteroid or other celestial body in the past which changed the direction of Venus' rotation.
4. Third Brightest Object in the Sky
Venus is one of the brightest celestial bodies after the Sun and Moon. So, when it comes to the brightest celestial bodies at night, Venus is second only to the Moon.
This is because Venus has a magnitude of around -3.8 to -4.6. In fact, sometimes Venus can be seen during the day if the sky is clear.
5. Names Given by the Romans
There are seven bright objects in the sky, and the ancient Romans named them after their most important gods and goddesses.
As one of the brightest, the Romans named this planet after the goddess of love and beauty in their mythology. Interestingly, Venus is the only planet named after a female goddess.
6. Its size is similar to Earth
Venus is about 7,521 miles (12,104 kilometers) wide, while Earth is about 7,926 miles (12,756 kilometers) wide. This difference is only around 638 kilometers. Despite being nearly the same size, Venus is lighter than Earth.
Venus has a mass of about 81.5% of Earth's mass. Both Earth and Venus have similar inner layers, such as a core, liquid mantle and crust on their surfaces.
7. Known as the Morning Star and Evening Star
Venus has the interesting nicknames "Morning Star" and "Evening Star". This is because ancient people thought that Venus was two different celestial bodies. When Venus was visible after sunset, the Greeks called it Phosphorus, and Hesperus as Venus was visible before sunrise.
The Romans also gave it different names, namely Lucifer and Vesper. Maya astronomers have also made detailed observations of Venus since 650 AD.

Venus adalah salah satu benda langit yang paling terang setelah Matahari dan Bulan. Jadi, ketika berbicara mengenai benda langit yang paling terang di malam hari, Venus menjadi yang kedua setelah Bulan.
