The 83-year-old queen is the only reigning queen in the world and Europe's longest-serving monarch. Margrethe ascended the throne upon the death of her father, King Frederik IX, in 1972.
He said that the decision to abdicate was taken after a period of reflection after his back surgery in early 2023. He felt that the New Year 2024 was the right time to announce his resignation.
"This operation naturally raises thoughts about the future - whether the time has come to hand over responsibility to the next generation," he said.
"I have decided that now is the right time," he added.
Margrethe also thanked the Danish people for their support over the years. The Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, thanked the queen for her service.
"On behalf of the entire population, I would like to express my deepest thanks to Her Majesty the Queen for her lifelong dedication and tireless efforts for the Kingdom," he said in a statement. "Even though duties and positions have been passed down for more than 1,000 years, it is still difficult to comprehend that the time has now come for a succession of thrones," the statement said.
He said many Danes today barely know any other rulers. He said Queen Margrethe II was the symbol of Denmark for many years. "Many of us have never known another ruler. Queen Margrethe is the symbol of Denmark and for many years has poured out her words and feelings into us as a nation and state," he said.
Queen Margrethe II is a popular figure in Denmark. Many people in Denmark hope that Margrethe will remain on the throne until the end of her life. Margrethe also said that she was not expected to become Queen when she was born. But when she was 13, Danish law was changed to allow women to ascend the throne.

The 55 year old man is also known as a daredevil who took part in a 4 month ski expedition across Greenland in 2000. He was hospitalized due to a sledding accident.
"I don't want to shut myself up in a fortress. I want to be myself, a human being," said Frederik, who insisted he would stick to that even after ascending the throne.
Frederik, like King Charles III of England, was known for his love of the environment. He vowed to 'guide the ship' of Denmark into the future.
His wife, Princess Mary, had grown up on the Australian island of Tasmania and was working as a lawyer when the couple met in 2000 in a bar in Sydney during the Olympics. Mary once said she didn't know that the man she was meeting at that time was the Danish prince. "Half an hour later someone came up to me and said, 'Do you know who these people are?'" he said.
