YouTube is getting fiercer, videos are blocked if you don't watch ads or subscribe to premium
- YouTube is getting serious about fighting ad blocking features or what are usually called "ad blockers". This ad blocker feature is usually installed on a browser or cellphone using a third party service.
Now, YouTube is reportedly increasingly aggressive in blocking videos if a user is detected using an ad blocker on their device. This was confirmed by YouTube communications manager Christopher Lawton in a statement given to a media outlet in the US.
"YouTube is expanding its efforts to crack down on ad blockers. The platform has launched a global effort to encourage users to allow ads or try YouTube Premium," Lawton said.
YouTube argues that advertising supports a diverse ecosystem of content creators globally and allows billions of people to access their favorite content on YouTube for free. If you don't want to watch advertisements, users can subscribe to YouTube Premium. That way, content creators will still earn money from user subscriptions.
Users who are detected using an ad blocker will see a black notification video window entitled "Ad blocker violates YouTube's terms of service." At this point, users cannot watch YouTube videos.

In the notification, YouTube said that the video is blocked unless the user turns off the ad blocker feature and allows ads. YouTube directs users to try the YouTube Premium subscription service to enjoy watching YouTube without being interrupted by advertisements.
At the bottom, users can click the "Allow YouTube Ads" option to continue watching videos with ads. Or the "Try YouTube Premium" option to watch videos without ads, but pay a monthly subscription fee.
YouTube's efforts to combat this ad blocking feature began last June. At that time, Lawton described that the effort was still a small experiment, so it had not had much impact on many users.
However, over the past few weeks, YouTube has expanded those efforts. The reason is, according to an Android Authority report, more and more users who install ad blockers report that they cannot watch YouTube videos.
According to KompasTekno's monitoring, YouTube's efforts to combat ad blockers by blocking these videos have not been distributed evenly to all users. The reason is, to this day, we can still watch YouTube videos as usual with an active ad blocker and without subscribing to YouTube Premium.
Apart from fighting ad blockers, this year, YouTube made several changes regarding advertising on its platform, as compiled by KompasTekno from The Verge, Wednesday (1/11/2023).
For example, in May 2023, YouTube introduced 30-second advertisements that could not be skipped in its TV application. YouTube is also experimenting with longer but less frequent ad breaks on YouTube TV.

Kini, YouTube dilaporkan semakin gencar memblokir video bila pengguna terdeteksi menggunakan ad blocker di perangkat miliknya. Hal ini dikonfirmasi oleh manajer komunikasi YouTube Christopher Lawton dalam sebuah pernyataan yang diberikan kepada sebuah media di AS.
"YouTube memperluas upayanya untuk menindak pemblokir iklan. Platform ini telah meluncurkan upaya global untuk mendorong pengguna mengizinkan iklan atau mencoba YouTube Premium," kata Lawton.
YouTube beralasan, iklan mendukung beragam ekosistem pembuat konten secara global dan memungkinkan miliaran orang mengakses konten favorit mereka di YouTube secara gratis. Bila tak mau menonton iklan, pengguna bisa berlangganan YouTube Premium. Dengan begitu, konten kreator akan tetap mendapatkan uang dari langganan pengguna.
Pengguna yang terdeteksi menggunakan ad blocker akan melihat jendela video pemberitahuan berwarna hitam bertajuk "Ad blocker melanggar syarat penggunaan layanan YouTube". Pada titik ini, pengguna tidak bisa menonton video YouTube.

Di dalam pemberitahuan, YouTube mengatakan bahwa video diblokir, kecuali pengguna mematikan fitur ad blocker dan mengizinkan iklan. YouTube mengarahkan pengguna mencoba layanan berlangganan YouTube Premium untuk menikmati nonton YouTube tanpa terganggu iklan.
Di paling bawah, pengguna bisa mengeklik opsi "Allow YouTube Ads" untuk melanjutkan menonton video dengan iklan. Atau opsi "Try YouTube Premium" untuk menonton video tanpa iklan, tapi membayar biaya langganan per bulan.
Upaya YouTube memerangi fitur pemblokir iklan ini dimulai sejak Juni lalu. Ketika itu, Lawton menggambarkan bahwa upaya itu masih bersifat eksperimen kecil, sehingga belum banyak memengaruhi banyak pengguna.
Namun, selama beberapa minggu terakhir, YouTube memperluas upaya tersebut. Pasalnya, menurut laporan Android Authority, semakin banyak pengguna yang memasang pemblokir iklan melaporkan bahwa mereka tidak dapat menonton video YouTube.
Pantauan KompasTekno, upaya YouTube memerangi ad blocker dengan memblokir video ini belum merata ke seluruh pengguna. Pasalnya, hingga hari ini, kami masih bisa menonton video YouTube seperti biasa dengan ad blocker aktif dan tanpa berlangganan YouTube Premium.
Selain memerangi ad blocker, tahun ini, YouTube membuat beberapa perubahan soal iklan di platformnya, sebagaimana dihimpun KompasTekno dari The Verge, Rabu (1/11/2023).
Misalnya, pada Mei 2023, YouTube memperkenalkan iklan berdurasi 30 detik yang tidak bisa dilewati alias di-skip di aplikasi TV-nya. YouTube juga bereksperimen dengan jeda iklan yang lebih lama namun lebih jarang di YouTube TV.
