- As AI advances, chatbot startups need capital to train and develop their models. Google will spend millions of dollars investing in Character.AI.
This investment will deepen the cooperative relationship between Google and Character.AI. The reason is, Character.AI has used Google's cloud services and tensor processing units (TPUs) to train their models.
Founded by former Google employees Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, Character.AI gives users the opportunity to send messages with virtual versions of celebrities such as Kendall Jenner to anime characters.

Character.AI does not charge any fees, it only offers a subscription at a cost of USD 9.99 (Rp. 156,950) per month to skip the queue to access the chatbot.
Referring to data from Similarweb, this chatbot which offers a variety of voices and figures attracts many users aged 18 to 24 years who contribute to 60% of traffic on their website. This demographic helps position Character.AI among other AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT and Bard, as a provider of fun AI companions.
Character.AI said that six months after its launch, its website was attracting 100 million visitors a month. Character.AI is still in talks to raise equity funding from venture capital investors, which will provide them with capital of more than USD 5 billion (Rp. 78.6 trillion).
In March, they managed to raise funds of up to USD 150 million (Rp. 2.4 billion) led by Andreessen Howaritz. Meanwhile, the agreement between Character.AI and Google is still in process so it is possible that changes to the agreement could still occur.
Google has invested in several AI startups, including USD 2 billion for models from the company Anthropic. Like Character.AI, Anthropic uses cloud services and the latest version of Google's TPUs.
It seems that this has become a trend where high-tech cloud service providers, for example Google, are making deals with AI service providers to use their cloud and hardware. The cloud and hardware are then utilized by AI companies to develop models and serve users. Case in point is Microsoft investing in OpenAI, and Google and Amazon in Anthropic.
