The secret of the Huawei Mate 60 Pro chip that makes the US angry is revealed
- The presence of the Huawei Mate 60 Pro is a sign of the Chinese giant's victory over the United States (US). The launch of the latest cellphone comes four years after Huawei was blacklisted by the US government.
One thing that made the US angry was the presence of the Kirin 9000s chip in the cellphone. At launch, Huawei did not reveal the type of chip used and refused to confirm that the Mate 60 Pro supports 5G networks.
Based on a teardown conducted by research firm Tech Insight, it was revealed that the maker of the Kirin 9000S CPU is Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC).
The US accused the production of 7nm chips that already support 5G networks of violating US sanctions launched last October.
At that time, US government regulations limited the manufacture of logic chips from China to 7nm. However, other findings reveal that the Kirin 9000s does not use 7nm fabrication.
The findings were revealed by the chief executive of research company Fomalhaut Techno Solutions, Minatake Mitchell Kashio. He believes the Kirin 9000s CPU is made with SMIC's 14nm process, quoted from SCMP, Friday (6/10/2023).
According to him, several special techniques were carried out on the chip. That way the chip can work close to the capabilities of a 7nm class processor.
Meanwhile, Lee from Jefferies doubts SMIC's involvement in making the Kirin 9000s. According to him, the chip could have been made directly by Huawei.
"Even though the Kirin 9000s may have a structure built the same as a chip made by SMIC, it could be made by Huawei," said Lee.
He also added, "We believe it is very likely that Huawei bought SMIC's technology and developed the Kirin 9000s."
However, Albright Stonebridge's Vice President for China and technology policy leader, Paul Triolo, said it would be difficult to prove SMIC had violated export rules imposed by the US. He also estimates that the local government will be reluctant to impose new restrictions due to the presence of the chip.
"Any new restrictions would harm both US companies' suppliers and be opposed by US industry," he said.

Saat itu, aturan pemerintah AS membatas pembuatan logic chip asal China pada 7nm. Namun temuan lain mengungkapkan Kirin 9000s tak menggunakan fabrikasi 7nm.
Temuan itu diungkapkan kepala eksekutif perusahaan riset Fomalhaut Techno Solutions, Minatake Mitchell Kashio. Dia meyakini CPU Kirin 9000s dibuat dengan proses 14nm milik SMIC, dikutip dari SCMP, Jumat (6/10/2023).
Menurutnya, beberapa teknis khusus dilakukan pada chip tersebut. Dengan begitu chip bisa bekerja mendekati kemampuan prosesor kelas 7nm.
Sementara itu, Lee dari Jefferies meragukan keterlibatan SMIC dalam pembuatan Kirin 9000s. Menurutnya, chip itu bisa saja dibuat langsung oleh Huawei.
"Meskipun Kirin 9000s mungkin punya struktur yang dibangun sama seperti chip buatan SMIC, bisa saja dibuat oleh Huawei," kata Lee.
Dia juga menambahkan,"kami percaya kemungkinan besar Huawei membeli membeli teknologi SMIC dan mengembangkan Kirin 9000s".
Namun, Wakil Presiden untuk China dan pemimpin kebijakan teknologi Albright Stonebridge, Paul Triolo, mengatakan sulit membuktikan SMIC telah melanggar aturan ekspor yang diterapkan AS. Dia juga memperkirakan pemerintah setempat enggan melakukan pembatasan baru dengan keberadaan chip tersebut.
"Tiap pembatasan baru akan merugikan pemasok kedua perusahaan AS dan ditentang oleh industri AS," ungkapnya.
