- Google launched its newest smartphone operating system, Android 14. However, not all Android phones get the latest update.

The contrasting distinguishing feature is that Android 14 gives users new lock screen customizations. Users can swap between different clock styles and formats, making the phone's style a little more personal.

Then, there's expanded passlock support and allows users to use fingerprints to log in to third-party apps.

Apps can also use Android's new Credential Manager to combine all of a user's sign-in methods, such as passwords and “Sign in with Google,” as a way to simplify the sign-in experience and provide the most secure options.

Other new features include better camera extension support, 10-bit HDR image support, and a Health Connect feature that can store health and fitness data on the device, similar to Apple Health.

Apart from that, there are also AI-generated wallpapers, monthly reminders for data sharing, and camera flash notifications.

Android 14 was first released as a developer beta test program in February, shortly after Google's annual Google I/O event.

Not evenly distributed

Quoted from The Verge, the release of Android 14 to the general public was initially scheduled for early September but was finally postponed to Thursday (5/10).

However, according to a CNet report, currently Android 14 has only been released for several Google Pixel devices. Why is that?

Every Android phone does support Android OS but not on the same line.

Google typically develops Android updates, known as Android OS, and then releases them to its own devices, such as the Pixel Pro, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet.

Meanwhile, other smartphone manufacturers using Android are turning the stock Android OS into their own updates or skins. For example, Samsung has One UI and OnePlus has OxygenOS.
