Joe Biden's Moment at the UN Event, Hits the Flag and Forgets to Shake Hands with the President of Brazil
- US President Joe Biden appeared to have bumped into the flag and forgot to shake hands with his Brazilian counterpart, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva when announcing new cooperation between the two countries.
Joe Biden (80) and Lula da Silva (77) met on Wednesday (20/9/2023), on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The two leaders agreed to establish cooperation that focuses on workers' rights.
However, there was a "blunder" moment in the meeting.
Quoting the New York Post, when Joe Biden came on stage, he hit the Brazilian flag to his right.
Joe Biden paused briefly to make sure the flag did not fall, before continuing towards the center of the stage.
Not long after that, the oldest US president experienced problems with his translator.
This difficulty seemed to be recognized by his colleague, Lula da Silva, who was also on stage with the Director General of the International Labor Organization Gilbert Huongbo.
"Can you hear me, Mr President? This is a historic moment for Brazil and America," asked Lula da Silva.
Joe Biden did not immediately respond to Lula da Silva's question.
The Brazilian President asked again, "Mr President, can you hear me?"
Joe Biden finally nodded in response, but continued fiddling with his headset throughout Lula's speech.
At one point, the device came loose and Joe Biden appeared upset.
Then when the event was over, Joe Biden shake hands with Huongbo.
But he immediately turned around and left the stage.
Lula, who intended to approach Joe Biden to offer his hand, immediately gave up his intention and chose to leave the stage too.
Despite Joe Biden's position, both presidents agreed to pursue stronger ties.
The two spoke about their commitment to creating good-paying jobs and ensuring that workers benefit from the digital and green energy transition.
Biden said the partnership between the US and Brazil on workers' rights currently only involves the two countries.
However, other countries and organizations are also welcome to join.
Lula also said that amid threats to democracy around the world, it was important to uphold workers' rights and help working families.
Concerns for Joe Biden's Health
In 2021, the public was worried about the health condition of US President Joe Biden, who tripped several times on the steps of Air Force One.
Reported by the Washington Examiner, former White House doctor Ronny Jackson shared his concerns about Biden's condition in a tweet on Sunday (21/3/2021).
"I served as White House physician under THREE Presidents," he wrote as the start of the tweet.
"I've seen what it takes physically AND mentally to do the job."
"I can tell you right now that the way Biden is hiding from the public is a HUGE red flag."
"Something went wrong!"
Biden tripped twice and fell while climbing the stairs to Air Force One, at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on March 19, 2021.
Biden then traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, to visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and to meet with Georgia Asian American leaders, following the Atlanta Spa shootings.
White House communications officials said President Joe Biden was not injured.
"The wind was pretty strong at that time," White House Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters riding with Biden to his event at the CDC in Georgia.
"It was very windy. I almost fell myself climbing the stairs. He is 100 percent fine."

In the video circulating on social media, Biden appears to stumble while walking up the stairs, then stumbles again as he moves away from the initial stumbling.
He finally reached the top of the stairs to give his signature salute as he entered the plane.
Biden's age and history of leg injuries led the press to ask questions about the incident.
White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield tweeted that she was happy to report that Biden was doing well and did not even require attention from the medical team traveling with him.
"Nothing more than a wrong step on the stairs," he said

Tak lama setelah itu, presiden tertua AS itu mengalami masalah pada alat penerjemahnya.
Kesulitan itu nampaknya disadari oleh rekannya, Lula da Silva, yang juga berada di atas panggung bersama Direktur Jenderal Organisasi Buruh Internasional Gilbert Huongbo.
"Anda bisa mendengar saya, Pak Presiden? Ini momen bersejarah bagi Brasil dan juga Amerika," tanya Lula da Silva.
Joe Biden tidak langsung merespons pertanyaan Lula da Silva.
Presiden Brasil itu kembali bertanya, "Pak Presiden, apakah Anda bisa mendengar saya?"
Joe Biden akhirnya mengangguk sebagai respons, tetapi terus mengutak-atik headset-nya sepanjang pidato Lula.
Pada satu titik, alat tersebut lepas dan Joe Biden tampak kesal.
Kemudian saat acara sudah selesai, Joe Biden bersalaman dengan Huongbo.
Namun ia langsung balik badan meninggalkan panggung.
Lula yang berniat mendekati Joe Biden untuk menyodorkan tangannya, langsung mengurungkan niatnya dan memilih untuk ikut meninggalkan panggung juga.
Terlepas dari sikap Joe Biden, kedua presiden sepakat untuk menjalin hubungan yang lebih kuat.
Keduanya berbicara tentang komitmen mereka untuk menciptakan lapangan kerja dengan gaji yang baik dan memastikan bahwa pekerja mendapatkan manfaat dari transisi energi digital dan ramah lingkungan.
Biden mengatakan kemitraan antara AS dan Brasil mengenai hak-hak pekerja saat ini hanya melibatkan kedua negara.
Namun, negara dan organisasi lain juga dipersilakan untuk bergabung.

"Saya menjabat sebagai dokter Gedung Putih di bawah TIGA Presiden," tulisnya mengawali cuitan.
"Saya telah melihat apa yang diperlukan secara fisik DAN mental untuk melakukan pekerjaan itu."
"Saya dapat memberi tahu Anda sekarang bahwa cara Biden bersembunyi dari publik adalah tanda bahaya BESAR."
"Ada yang tidak beres!"
Biden tersandung dua kali dan terjatuh saat menaiki tangga menuju Air Force One, di Pangkalan Bersama Andrews di Maryland pada tanggal 19 Maret 2021.
Biden saat itu melakukan perjalanan ke Atlanta, Georgia, untuk mengunjungi Pusat Pengendalian dan Pencegahan Penyakit, dan untuk bertemu dengan para pemimpin Georgia Asia-Amerika, setelah penembakan Atlanta Spa.
Pejabat komunikasi Gedung Putih mengatakan Presiden Joe Biden tidak mengalami cedera.
"Angin cukup kencang saat itu," ujar Wakil Sekretaris Pers Gedung Putih Karine Jean-Pierre kepada wartawan yang berkendara bersama Biden ke acaranya di CDC di Georgia.
"Cuacanya sangat berangin. Saya sendiri hampir jatuh saat menaiki tangga. Dia 100 persen baik-baik saja."

Dalam video yang beredar di media sosial, tampak Biden tersandung saat berjalan menaiki tangga, lalu tersandung lagi saat beranjak dari sandungan awal.
Ia akhirnya mencapai ujung tangga untuk memberikan penghormatan khasnya saat memasuki pesawat.
Usia Biden dan riwayat cedera kaki membuat pers mengajukan pertanyaan tentang insiden tersebut.
Direktur Komunikasi Gedung Putih Kate Bedingfield menulis cuitan bahwa dia dengan senang hati melaporkan bahwa Biden baik-baik saja dan bahkan tidak memerlukan perhatian dari tim medis yang bepergian bersamanya.
"Tidak lebih dari salah langkah di tangga," ujarnya
