VOA looks back on past State of the Union addresses in preparation for U.S. President Joe Biden’s upcoming speech, Tuesday, February 7, 2023.
The State of the Union address is an annual speech given by the current President of the United States to a joint session of the United States Congress in the beginning of the calendar year.
The first — and the shortest — State of the Union address was delivered by former President George Washington in 1790. Former President Bill Clinton gave the longest spoken address, which lasted about an hour and a half.
Tuesday will mark President Biden’s second State of the Union address. Anticipated topics he may reference include inflation, domestic spending and Russia’s war in Ukraine.
