AKA UTAHLITE, VARISCITE is a rare hydrous aluminum phosphate mineral that usually crystallizes in the form of massive fine grained aggregates. Variscite crystals are extremely rare.

Variscite is most commonly green, however it can also be brownish, red and pink.

The various shades of green is caused by trace amounts of chromium.

When variscite is bluish green, it is sometimes confused with turquoise and in some cases, may be marketed as "variquoise".

Variscite is named after "Variscia", the historical name of the Vogtland district in Saxony, Germany where it was first discovered and described in 1837.
