THE LEGEND OF NYI RORO KIDUL

THE LEGEND OF NYI RORO KIDUL
Quoted from a book entitled Collection of the Most Popular Indonesian Folk Stories written by Lia Nuralia and Lim Imadudin, Nyi Roro Kidul was the son of King Prabu Siliwangi from the Pakuan Pajajaran kingdom. His mother was Empress Kinasih, the empress who was most loved by King Siliwangi. Nyi Roro Kidul, whose original name was Putri Kandita, has a beautiful face more than her mother. Therefore, it is not surprising that Kandita became her father's favorite daughter.

King Siliwangi's attitude created jealousy between the concubines and the king's other sons and daughters. Finally, they conspired to get rid of Kandita and her mother. Long story short, Kandita and her mother were stricken with an incurable disease. Initially they were ostracized and then expelled from the palace on the orders of King Siliwangi due to pressure from his concubines and sons and daughters.

Princess Kandita and the empress went on a journey to the south of the kingdom. On the way, the empress died. During her journey, Princess Kandita arrived at a river. Without hesitation, he enjoyed the river water to his heart's content. He followed the river upstream and found several springs that were gushing profusely. Then, he took a bath. In his solitude, he settled near a hot spring and practiced kanuragan. After living in the river for so long, without realizing it, his illness gradually disappeared.

After recovering, Kandita traveled downstream to the river. Kandita was amazed when he arrived at the mouth of the river which was close to the sea. After that, Putri Kandita decided to settle in the seaside area south of the Pakuan Pajajaran area.

While living there, Kandita was widely known throughout various kingdoms on the island of Java as a beautiful woman. Since then, many princes have wanted to marry her. Facing the applicants, he put forward a condition, namely that the applicants must overcome his supernatural powers, including fighting with the sea waves on the south coast
