Google has used artificial intelligence (AI) technology to add 110 new languages to the Google Translate application including Cantonese, Punjabi (Shahmukhi), and NKo. Although Google Translate still has limitations, the application is very useful for getting information or communicating. About a quarter of these new languages come from Africa. Google says that all the new languages represent 614 million speakers, about eight percent of the world's population.
Google also introduced its AI model PaLM 2 which helps Google Translate learn languages that are closely related to each other more efficiently, such as languages similar to Hindi, such as Awadhi and Marwadi, as well as French creole languages such as Seychellois Creole and MauritianCreole.
"As technology advances and collaborates with linguists and native speakers, Google will continue to support a wider variety of languages and spelling conventions," said Isaac Caswell (Senior Software Engineer Google Translate) as quoted by Engadget.
The last major addition to Google Translate came in May 2022 with the help of Zero-Shot Machine Translation, which allows models to learn new languages without examples. Later that year, Google announced the 1,000 Languages Initiative, which aimed to create AI models that could support multiple languages around the world.
Google launched a new feature called "Summarize" based on artificial intelligence (AI) in the Gmail application for iOS and Android devices. The AI feature allows users to manage emails more efficiently and provides concise summaries of long email conversations.
"This feature is especially useful for those who travel frequently and need a quick way to sort their inbox," Google wrote.
Google ensures that the AI features are available to users who subscribe to certain Google Workspace AI packages. With the "Summarize this email" button appearing under the subject of emails with more than two replies, users can get a summary via the Gemini sheet that appears from the bottom of the screen as quoted by Phone Arena.
Users can also rate the summary by giving it a thumbs up or down. The rollout of this feature has already begun and will be fully available to all eligible users in the next few weeks.
Additionally, Google also introduced the Gemini side panel in the web version of Gmail. This panel, powered by Gemini 1.5 Pro, provides advanced features such as summarizing email conversations, suggesting replies, helping organize emails, and answering questions about emails in your inbox or Google Drive files.
Users can access this feature by pressing the Gemini star icon in the upper right corner. The rollout of these side panels has also begun and will be fully available in the coming weeks.
The "Summarize" feature in the mobile app and the Gemini side panel in the web version can only be accessed by users who subscribe to certain Google Workspace AI plans such as Gemini for Business and Enterprise, Gemini for Education and Education Premium, or Google One AI Premium.
With the launch of this feature, Google continues to demonstrate its commitment to utilizing artificial intelligence technology to increase productivity and ease users in managing email.
