Online gambling cases are becoming a scourge in society. With significant social and material losses, experts believe that online gambling can 'hack' the brain.

Lecturer in Media and Cultural Studies at Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya (UM Surabaya), Radius Setiyawan, said that online gambling could result in huge losses. Starting from family conflicts to death.
"In this case, online gambling can result in conflict and tension in family relationships and the social environment which can end in death," said Radius on the UM Surabaya website, quoted on Thursday (13/4/2024).

Communities Vulnerable to Online Gambling

He also touched on the online gambling case carried out by police officers in Mojokerto. Upset and angry, his wife, who was a fellow police officer, set the perpetrator on fire.

According to Radius, this case carried out by police officers is an indication that society is living in vulnerability. This means that online gambling addiction can attack anyone, both police and civil society.

Not only that, the digital era also makes it easier to spread online gambling. Radius explained that the human brain is easily attacked by information from advertising, social media, news and gossip. "It is very possible for the human brain to be hacked, the result is deception, because of the image of getting money easily and becoming rich instantly," he explained.

Accuse Influencers

Radius said that the role of influencers in marketing online gambling is very dangerous for society. Remembering that artists or influencers are often used as examples by their followers.

"Of course it is very dangerous, because what they say has the potential to influence followers' behavioral patterns. It could be said that influencers are trendsetters for millennials and generation Z," he explained.
"This is supported by the weak and unstable economic situation of society. So we can be sure that online gambling is a way out." added Radius.

Encourage the Government to Tackle Online Gambling

In the midst of the increasing number of online gambling cases occurring, Radius encourages the government to increase digital literacy so that people are not easily 'tempted'. In this era of information flooding, Radius reminds people to think reflectively. This means no longer seeing the world from the surface. He reminded the public to be aware of the major impacts caused by online gambling, such as loss of productivity, especially for young people, divorce and increased domestic conflict.
