- Sheynnis Palacios' victory as Miss Universe 2023 sparked controversy. Different from other countries, the Nicaraguan government does not want this woman to be chosen as the world's beauty queen. Initially he was congratulated but recently Sheynnis was reported to have been exiled by his own country.
Sheynnis Palacios and family are said to be in indefinite exile by the Nicaraguan regime led by Daniel Ortega. This was conveyed by Anne Jakrajutatip as CEO of the Miss Universe Organization. In her letter, Anne expressed her sympathy for Sheynnis while criticizing the Nicaraguan government.
"You work hard to care for your mother and extended family who are also far from your homeland. You are an example of a butterfly woman with broken wings who never gives in to the bad actions, disrespectful intentions, and evil intentions of any authoritarian, " wrote Anne.
After being crowned Miss Universe 2023, the government provided support for Sheynnis Palacios' victory. They even think that this achievement can restore the image of a country that is known to be isolated and repressive in international eyes.
But not long after, the government gave a contrasting statement. Reported by ABCNews, the regime was actually angry with its victory after learning that Sheynnis had graduated from the college that was the center of protests against the government in 2018. Sheynnis is said to have participated in the protest.
Daniel Ortega's government also disliked Sheynnis' victory celebrations. After being crowned Miss Universe, people celebrated in the streets by carrying the white and blue national flag instead of Daniel Ortega's red and black Sandinista flag. This is considered to have made the Nicaraguan opposition happy.
To date, Sheynnis Palacios has not officially announced that he is in exile. However, local media said that the 23-year-old woman's grandmother and sister had left their country for the US to meet Sheynnis' mother who lives in California.
