Viral Highest Active Volcano in Antarctica Ejects Gold of Fantastic Value
- Scientists reveal that the highest active volcano in Antarctica emits gold of fantastic value. This discovery by an American geologist in 1991 went viral after it became known to the public. At that time, geologists discovered gold particles in volcanic gas and snow near the volcano.

Then IFL Science stated that these precious metal particles were even detected at a distance of 1,000 km (621 miles).
What's even more interesting is that the volcano is still active today. Philip Kyle, of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, explained that gold deposits can come from volcanic rock so that when lava from the mountain – which has a peak height of 3,794 meters (12,448 feet) – emits hot gases, this carries some of the gold particles toair. Approximately how much gold is ejected and what is the name of the mountain that spews this gold?

Meanwhile flecks of gold were discovered by American geologists from the vomit of Mount Erebus measuring between '0.1 and 20 micrometres' in volcanic gas and '60 micrometres' in nearby snow.
While this amount may seem very small, in one day, scientists estimate that the volcano produces approximately 80 grams (2.8 ounces) of gold.
According to Gold.co.uk, at the time of writing, the current price of one gram of gold is 75.76 USD. This means the volcano emits around 6,000 USD worth of gold (or around IDR 97 million) every day - however, this depends on the quality and certain other factors. However, there is a much more serious and important reason why people travel down to visit the mountain.
Mount Erebus is also known as the site of tragedy.
On November 28, 1979, Air New Zealand Flight 901 crashed into the side of a mountain. The aircraft had flown over Ross Island where Mount Erebus is located as part of a scheduled Antarctic sightseeing flight that had been operating since 1977.
A total of 237 passengers and 20 crew members died in the crash and from that day Air New Zealand stopped all flights across Antarctica. This disaster became known as the Erebus disaster.
