- Currency is a unit of value of legal means of payment in the form of money for carrying out economic transactions. Each country has a different currency unit of value. And the United States (US) dollar is the most popular among other currencies in the world. This is because the US dollar (USD) is the most widely used and is the benchmark for comparing currencies. However, the US dollar is not the currency that has the strongest value in the world. The title of strongest currency belongs to the Kuwaiti dinar (KWD).
The following are the 10 strongest currencies in the world according to data reported on the Forbes website (22/4/2024):
1. Kuwaiti Dinar (KWD)
The Kuwaiti dinar is the strongest currency in the world, with 1 Kuwaiti dinar equal to 3.25 US dollars, or around IDR 52,686.
Kuwait is located on the Persian Gulf between Saudi Arabia and Iraq, and the country derives most of its wealth as a leading global oil exporter.
2. Bahraini Dinar (BHD)
The Bahraini dinar is the second strongest currency in the world, with 1 Bahraini dinar equal to 2.65 US dollars, or IDR 43,063
The country derives most of its wealth from oil and gas exports. The Bahraini dinar entered circulation in 1965 and was pegged to the dollar.
3. Omani Rial (OMR)
Oman is located between the United Arab Emirates and Yemen at the eastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. The value of 1 Omani rial is equal to 2.60 US dollars, or around IDR 42,162.
Oman is a major exporter of oil and gas. The Omani rial was introduced in the 1970s and is pegged to the dollar.
4. Jordanian Dinar (JOD)
The Jordanian dinar entered circulation in 1950 and was pegged to the dollar. The value of 1 Jordanian dinar is worth 1.41 US dollars, or around Rp. 22,903.
Jordan does not rely heavily on oil and gas exports. The country has struggled with sluggish economic growth and rising debt.
5. British Pound (GBP)
The UK economy is one of the largest in the world based on gross domestic product (GDP).
The pound is free floating, not tied to any other currency. The value of 1 British pound is equivalent to 1.25 US dollars, or around Rp. 20,283.
6. Gibraltar Pound (GIP)
The Gibraltar pound was first introduced in the 1920s and was pegged to the British pound (equivalent, meaning one GIP equals one GBP). This means that 1 Gibralta pound is the same as the British pound, equivalent to 1.25 US dollars or around Rp. 20,283.
7. Cayman Islands Dollar (KYD)
The Cayman Islands dollar was first introduced in the 1970s and was pegged to the dollar.
The value of 1 Cayman dollar is equal to 1.20 US dollars, or around Rp. 19,497. The Cayman Islands itself is a British territory in the Caribbean and is an offshore financial center.
8. Swiss Franc (CHF)
The Swiss franc is the official tender of Switzerland and its small neighbor Liechtenstein. The value of 1 Swiss franc is equivalent to buying 1.09 US dollars, or around Rp. 17,771.
The Swiss franc was introduced in 1850 and was later pegged to the euro, before eventually switching to a free-floating currency.
