Kruszelnicki stated that he believed that the mystery was that there was no mystery in the first place. A bit anti-climatic compared to wormholes.
He said that the reasons behind the plane's disappearance could be explained simply, as the most likely causes were 'human error, bad weather, and heavy air and sea traffic. “It is located close to the Equator, near a rich part of the world – America – therefore the traffic is heavy,” said the scientist.
“According to Lloyd's of London and the US Coast Guard, the number of missing people in the Bermuda Triangle is equal to the number of missing people anywhere in the world on a percentage basis.”
Kruszelnicki, who has a scholarship at the University of Sydney to communicate science to the wider public, explains that the genesis of the conspiracy began with the 'disappearance of flight 19'.
Flight 19 occurred when five aircraft disappeared in a 'triangle', the flight was launched from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on December 5, 1945 and was intended to be a two-hour flight training mission with simple rules. Soon after, all the planes lost radio contact with their bases, and have not been seen since, and no remains of them were found in the ocean.
