The World's Largest Cruise Ship Sets Sail, but the World is Worried

- Icon of the Seas is set on its maiden voyage. However, this LNG fueled cruise ship has worried the world.
Reporting from the BBC on Sunday (28/1), the world's largest cruise ship is scheduled to sail from the port of Miami, Florida, USA. This ship belonging to Royal Caribbean International will depart on Saturday (27/1) Miami time.
Concerns have arisen from environmentalists. They warned that ships powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) would emit methane gas into the air.

"This is a step in the wrong direction," said Bryan Comer, director of the Ocean Program at the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT).
This 365 m long ship is planned to sail for 7 days in the tropics. Icon of the Seas has 20 docks and can accommodate 7,600 passengers.
"We estimate that the use of LNG as a marine fuel produces 120% more greenhouse gas emissions compared to marine gas oil," he explained.

Earlier this week, ICCT released a report stating that methane emissions from LNG-fueled ships were higher than existing regulatory estimates.
The results of burning LNG are cleaner than traditional marine fuels, such as fuel oil. However, LNG has a risk of leakage.
Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. This gas can trap 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide for 20 years. Reducing these emissions is seen as important to slowing global warming.
A Royal Caribbean spokesperson said that the Icon of the Seas is 24% more energy efficient than International Maritime Organization requirements for modern ships.
Parent company Royal Caribbean plans to introduce net-zero ships by 2035.
Icon of the Seas is 5 times the size of the Titanic. Building a cruise ship costs up to USD 2 billion. Inside there are 7 swimming pools, six water slides and more than 40 restaurants, bars and lounges.

Kekhawatiran muncul dari para pemerhati lingkungan. Mereka memperingatkan bahwa kapal bertenaga gas alam cair (LNG) ini akan mengeluarkan gas metana ke udara.

"Ini adalah langkah ke arah yang salah," ucap Bryan Comer, direktur Program Kelautan di Dewan Internasional Transportasi Bersih (ICCT).
Kapal sepanjang 365 m ini rencananya akan berlayar selama 7 hari di daerah tropis. Icon of the Seas memiliki 20 dok dan dapat menampung 7.600 penumpang.
"Kami memperkirakan bahwa penggunaan LNG sebagai bahan bakar laut menghasilkan emis gas rumah kaca sebesar 120% lebih banyak dibandingkan dengan minyak gas laut," jelasnya.

Awal pekan ini, ICCT merilis sebuah laporan yang menyatakan bahwa emisi metana dari kapal berbahan bakar LNG lebih tinggi dari perkiraan peraturan yang ada.
Hasil bakaran LNG memang lebih bersih dibandingkan dengan bahan bakar laut tradisional, seperti bahan bakar minyak. Namun LNG memiliki risiko kebocoran.
Metana merupakan gas rumah kaca yang kuat di atmosfer. Gas ini dapat memerangkap panas 80 kali lebih banyak daripada karbon dioksida selama 20tahun. Mengurangi emisi ini dipandang penting untuk memperlambat pemanasan global.
Seorang juru bicara Royal Caribbean mengatakan bahwa Icon of the Seas lebih hemat energi 24% dari kententuan Organisasi Maritim Internasional untuk kapal modern.
Perusahaan induk, Royal Caribbean berencana untuk memperkenalkan kapal net-zero pada tahun 2035.
