- South Africa delivered its opinion before the International Court of Justice or ICJ on Thursday (11/1/2024). This is related to accusations against Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, Palestine.
The trial was a follow-up to South Africa's application which was submitted on December 29 2023. In last Thursday's agenda, they were represented by at least six lawyers. One of them is Blinne Nà Ghrálaigh, a female lawyer from Ireland.
His speech on that occasion received praise. For this reason, his profile and what he said regarding the genocide sparked curiosity.
Blinne Nà Ghrálaigh's profile
It is not known how old Blinne Nà Ghrálaigh is. However, he is known as a senior lawyer from Ireland. His name was once included in the List of Legal Advisors at the ICC. He was also given several awards.
One of them was named International Junior of the Year in the 2022-2023 Legal 500 Bar Awards. This coronation was given after Blinne handled many cases involving various countries in the world.
Regarding his education, Blinne studied Modern and Medieval Languages at Queens' College, Cambridge. Then, it was discovered that he graduated from a Masters in Law at the University of Westminster, England.
Blinne also took a course at the Inns of Court Law School. Apart from that, he also studied International Law at New York University. Don't forget to study at Harvard Law School through a scholarship program.
On the other hand, Blinne often joins various associations. He, who is now an Executive Officer on the Bar Human Rights Committee, once served as Deputy Chair. Then, there are also other organizations that he participates in.
Starting from the Administrative Law Lawyers Association, the Criminal Lawyers Association, to the Human Rights Lawyers Association. This shows that Blinne Nà Ghrálaigh really deserves to be called a senior lawyer.
He practices in the fields of human rights, public law, public international law and criminal law. His speech regarding the genocide that occurred in Palestine drew attention and earned him praise.
Blinne Nà Ghrálaigh's Speech on Genocide
In her moments before the ICJ, Blinne Nà Ghrálaigh, argued about the risk of acts of genocide and the potential for further damage in Gaza. He also revealed that around 247 Palestinians were killed every day.
"Based on current figures, an average of 247 Palestinians are killed and at risk of being killed every day, many of them blown to pieces. "This number includes 48 mothers every day, two mothers every hour, and more than 117 children every day, so Unicef calls Israel's actions a war on children," he said.
Blinne said there were no signs the killings would stop. He also mentioned that many people with certain professions were targeted by Israel. They were killed until their families were also searched for.
“Given the current death rate, it shows no signs of abating. "Every day more than 3 medics, 2 teachers, more than one UN employee and more than one journalist will be killed," said Blinne.
"Many of them were at work or in attacks that appeared to be targeted against their families, homes or places of refuge," he continued.
Blinne also said that the risk of famine there was increasing. Because, when Palestinians want to seek help, they are always attacked. It's not surprising that many children have their legs amputated even without anesthesia.
“The risk of hunger will increase every day. "Every day, an average of 629 people will be injured, many times as many as they move from one place to another desperately seeking shelter," said Blinne.
“Every day more than 10 Palestinian children have one or both legs amputated, many of them without anesthesia. Every day more and more desperate people are forced to move from their shelters or face bombing. Entire multigenerational families will be wiped out," he continued.
What's even sadder, said Blinne, is that mass graves of Palestinians are also being dug up to be destroyed with bulldozers or bombs. He didn't understand why Israel would even want to deprive people of the world of peace who had already died.
"Every day, compared to current conditions, an average of 3,900 Palestinian homes will be damaged or destroyed. More mass graves will be dug, bulldozed and bombed, even depriving the dead of any dignity or peace," said Blinne.
In his speech, Blinne also showed two photos of a blackboard in a hospital in Gaza. First, a doctor's handwritten note that read, “We have done what we can. Remember us."
The second photo was taken of the same blackboard after the Israeli attack on the hospital on November 21 that killed the author of the message. Where it shows the board being destroyed.
