- Elon Musk's company, SpaceX, launched a satellite for the Starlink internet service which can connect directly to cellphones on the surface of the Earth. Elon Musk also did not forget to leave a message for global cellular operators, including Telkomsel, Indosat, XL and Smartfren. He ensured that this new Starlink feature was not to compete with cellular operators around the world.
In this launch, SpaceX launched six new Starlink satellites. The service supported by Starlink's new satellite is named "Direct-to-Cell."
Based on information on the official SpaceX website, the Direct-to-Cell service acts as a BTS in space which provides access to messaging, telephone and internet browsing features on all types of surfaces, both land and sea.
Meanwhile, to take advantage of this service, users do not need a special cellphone. All devices that support 4G LTE technology can connect to Starlink satellites without having to add additional accessories, firmware or special applications.
"Direct-to-Cell can work with existing LTE cellphones anywhere you can see the sky," wrote information on the official SpaceX website. In a post on X, Starlink stated that the mission of the six satellites that will be launched in the near future is to expand global connectivity and eliminate "dead zones".
Elon Musk responded to a post from SpaceX to provide peace of mind to companies providing cellular networks around the world. He emphasized that Starlink does not compete with cellular services provided by operators.
In Indonesia, cellular services are provided by four companies, namely Telkomsel as a subsidiary of PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk., PT Indosat Tbk. (Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison), PT XL Axiata Tbk., and PT Smartfren Telecom Tbk.
According to Musk, Direct-to-Cell service provides connectivity at any location on Earth. However, Starlink satellites only support a bandwidth of 7 Mb per "beam".
"So while this is a great solution for locations without cellular connectivity, [Direct-to-Cell] won't be able to compete with existing terrestrial cellular networks," Musk said.

Elon Musk pun tidak lupa menitipkan pesan untuk operator seluler global, termasuk Telkomsel, Indosat, XL, dan Smartfren. Ia memastikan fitur baru Starlink ini bukan untuk bersaing dengan operator seluler di seluruh dunia.
Dalam peluncuran ini, SpaceX meluncurkan enam satelit Starlink baru. Adapun layanan yang didukung oleh satelit baru Starlink diberi nama "Direct-to-Cell."
Berdasarkan informasi di situs resmi SpaceX, layanan Direct-to-Cell bertindak sebagai BTS di luar angkasa yang menyediakan akses ke fitur berkirim pesan, telepon, hingga menjelajah internet di segala jenis permukaan baik daratan maupun lautan.
Adapun, untuk memanfaatkan layanan ini, pengguna tidak membutuhkan HP khusus. Semua perangkat yang mendukung teknologi 4G LTE bisa tersambung dengan satelit Starlink tanpa harus menambah aksesori tambahan, firmware, atau aplikasi khusus.
Direct-to-Cell bisa bekerja dengan HP LTE yang ada saat ini di mana saja Anda bisa melihat langit," tulis informasi di website resmi SpaceX. Dalam unggahan di X, Starlink menyatakan bahwa misi enam satelit yang akan diluncurkan dalam waktu dekat adalah memperluas konektivitas global dan menghapus "zona mati".
Elon Musk merespons unggahan dari SpaceX untuk memberikan rasa tenang kepada perusahaan penyedia jaringan seluler di seluruh dunia. Dia menegaskan bahwa Starlink tidak bersaing dengan layanan seluler yang disediakan oleh para operator.
Di Indonesia, layanan seluler disediakan oleh empat perusahaan yaitu Telkomsel sebagai anak usaha PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk., PT Indosat Tbk. (Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison), PT XL Axiata Tbk., dan PT Smartfren Telecom Tbk.
Menurut Musk, layanan Direct-to-Cell menyediakan konektivitas di lokasi mana saja di Bumi. Namun, satelit Starlink hanya mendukung bandwidth 7 Mb per "beam" atau pancaran sinyal.
"Jadi walaupun ini adalah solusi luar biasa untuk lokasi tanpa konektivitas seluler, [Direct-to-Cell] tidak akan mampu bersaing dengan jaringan seluler terestrial yang sudah ada," kata Musk.
