Apple Gives Up, iPhone Owners Can Download Outside the App Store
- iPhone owners in the European Union can now download applications outside the App Store. This method of downloading applications, known as "sideloading", is a consequence of the implementation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) regulations in Europe.
DMA provides several new obligations for a company with a monthly user base of more than 45 million and a market capitalization exceeding US$ 82 billion. One of them is ensuring that their applications can work with competing companies' applications and freeing users to choose the default applications installed on the devices they buy.
Starting in March, app developers can offer alternative app stores for the iPhone and are free to opt out of Apple's payment system. Apple has always quoted a commission of 30 percent of the transaction value in the iPhone application (in-app purchase).
However, developers still have to pass a review by Apple to ensure application security and avoid fraud. In this process developers still have to pay "core technology fees" even if they choose not to use Apple's payment services.\
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney criticized Apple's new policy. Epic Games is the developer of the famous game Fortnite, which challenged the App Store business model in the United States courts. According to him, this new model is "rubbish" and he believes it does not comply with existing laws in the EU.
"Apple proposed that they could choose an app store that would be allowed to compete with the App Store. They could block Epic's attempt to launch their own app store and ban Fortnite from being sold there. Or, they could block Microsoft, Valve, and other new players," Sweeney said .
Apple released a new tool for application developers on Thursday (25/1/2024). Changes at the new iPhone user level will be released in March via an iOS update.
Besides Epic, other tech companies including Spotify have long criticized the commissions and restrictions Apple imposes through the App Store. In recent times, a series of lawsuits have forced Apple to change its policies.
Apple has previously committed to changing rules that prohibit iPhone apps from posting payment links to websites outside the app. This change is a fallout from Apple's defeat to Epic in an anti-monopoly trial in the US.
However, Apple still charges a 27 percent commission from transactions generated by the link along with a 3 percent processing fee.
In the EU, the new rules say developers are free to use third-party payment services on the App Store without additional fees. Apple also frees up iPhone users in the EU to choose their own native browser and touchless payment app, meaning they can use payment platforms other than Apple Pay.

CEO Epic Games Tim Sweeney mengkritik kebijakan baru Apple. Epic Games adalah pengembang game terkenal Fortnite, yang menggugat model bisnis App Store ke pengadilan Amerika Serikat. Menurutnya, model baru ini adalah "sampah" dan ia yakin tidak sesuai dengan hukum yang berlau di UE.
"Apple mengusulkan bahwa mereka bisa memilih toko aplikasi yang boleh bersaing dengan App Store. Mereka bisa saja memblokir upaya Epic meluncurkan toko aplikasi sendiri dan melarang Fortnite dijual di sana. Atau, mereka bisa memblokir Microsoft, Valve, dan pemain baru lain," kata Sweeney.
Apple merilis perangkat baru untuk pengembang aplikasi pada Kamis (25/1/2024). Perubahan di level pengguna iPhone baru akan dirilis pada Maret lewat update iOS.
Selain Epic, perusahaan teknologi lain termasuk Spotify sudah lama mengkritik komisi dan pembatasan yang diberlakukan Apple lewat App Store. Dalam beberapa waktu terakhir, rentetan gugatan hukum memaksa Apple untuk mengubah kebijakannya.
Apple sebelumnya telah berkomitmen untuk mengubah aturan yang melarang aplikasi di iPhone untuk memasang link pembayaran ke website di luar aplikasi. Perubahan ini adalah dampak dari kekalahan Apple dari Epic dalam sidang anti-monopoli di AS.
Namun Apple tetap memungut komisi 27 persen dari transaksi yang dihasilkan oleh link tersebut beserta biaya pemrosesan 3 persen.
Di UE, aturan yang baru menyatakan pengembang bebas menggunakan layanan pembayaran pihak ketiga di App Store tanpa pungutan tambahan. Apple juga membebaskan pengguna iPhone di UE untuk memilih browser bawaan dan aplikasi pembayaran tanpa sentuh sendiri, yang berarti mereka bisa menggunakan platform pembayaran selain Apple Pay.
