Basically, a country must have its own territories to be inhabited by its large population. In 2023, the largest population figure will be achieved by India, whose population will reach 1.43 billion people, followed by China with 1.42 billion people. The population size also depends on the area they own and other factors. However, some countries do not have a large population, not even 1000 people.
Reporting from Business Insider, Thursday (7/12/2023), the following countries have the smallest population in the world.
1. Vatican
This center of the Roman Catholic Church is the country with the least population in the world. The Vatican is inhabited by around 825 residents, the majority of whom are priests and nuns.
2. Nauru
Nauru is a country that only has an area of 20.98 square km, with around 11,232 residents. This country once had the highest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita in the world due to its abundant phosphate deposits.
However, today Nauru's GDP is the lowest in the world due to excess phosphate mining and climate change.
3. Tuvalu
Tuvalu is the country with the third least population in the world. This country is located in the South Pacific, inhabiting a small archipelago in the Polynesian region, between Hawaii and Australia.
The population of this country is around 11,722 people with an area of around 26 square km. However, rising sea levels threaten the island's habitability for the next hundred years.
4. Palau
Palau is a small island in the South Pacific Ocean. Palau is located about 700 km east of the Philippines and consists of more than 500 islands.
The population of this country is around 22,927 people with a land area of 395.06 square km.
5. San Marino
San Marino is a country in the middle of Italy. This country is close to the Adriatic Sea and is the oldest republic in the world. San Marino is also a suitable country for foreign and local tourists. About 3 million people come to San Marino every year, making it a busy city. The population in this country is around 34,037 people with an area of 61.2 square km.
6. Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein is a small European kingdom sandwiched between the two large countries of Switzerland and Austria. This country has a population of around 39,135 people.

Monaco is the most populous country on earth because it has around 39,684 residents with an area of only 1.21 square km. Described as a billionaire's playground, Monaco has a zero income tax policy that attracts the super-rich to the country.
8. Marshall Islands
The Marshall Islands consist of 29 coral atolls and five islands located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, between Hawaii and the Philippines. The country consists of 29 atolls and five islands, although the land area is only 181 square km.
The Marshall Islands has a population of 53,327 people. The capital, Majuro, is home to only around 25,000 people.
9. Saint Kitts and Nevis

Pada dasarnya, sebuah negara pasti memiliki wilayah-wilayahnya sendiri untuk dihuni oleh banyak penduduknya. Pada 2023, angka populasi terbesar diraih India yang penduduknya mencapai 1,43 miliar jiwa, dan diikuti Tiongkok sebanyak 1,42 miliar jiwa.
Besarnya angka populasi tersebut juga mengikuti luas wilayah yang mereka miliki dan faktor lainnya. Namun, beberapa negara tidak memiliki banyak penduduk, bahkan tidak mencapai 1000 jiwa.
Dilansir dari Business Insider, Kamis (7/12/2023), berikut ini negara yang memiliki populasi penduduk yang paling sedikit di dunia.
1. Vatikan
Pusat Gereja Katolik Roma ini menjadi negara dengan penduduk paling sedikit di dunia. Vatikan dihuni oleh sekitar 825 penduduk yang mayoritas merupakan seorang pendeta dan biarawati.
2. Nauru
Nauru merupakan negara yang hanya memiliki luas area 20,98 km persegi, dengan sekitar 11.232 penduduk. Negara ini sempat memiliki Produk Domestik Bruto (PDB) perkapita tertinggi di dunia karena simpanan fosfat yang berlimpah.
Namun, sekarang PDB Nauru menjadi yang terendah di dunia karena penambangan fosfat berlebih dan perubahan iklim.
3. Tuvalu
Tuvalu merupakan negara dengan populasi penduduk paling sedikit ketiga di dunia. Negara ini terletak di Pasifik Selatan yang mendiami kepulauan kecil di wilayah Polinesia, antara Hawaii dan Australia.
Jumlah penduduk negara ini sekitar 11.722 jiwa dengan luas daerahnya sekitar 26 km persegi. Namun, meningkatnya air laut mengancam kelayakan pulau untuk dihuni selama seratus tahun ke depan.
