UM Surabaya Lecturer: AI Can Trigger a Future Shock in the World of Education

- Artificial intelligence or Artificial Intelligence (AI) has many benefits in making human work easier. However, on the other hand, the use of AI has negative impacts that endanger users. 

How could it not be, currently AI can be accessed for free so that its users are increasing. Serious threats from the use of AI could also attack the world of education. 

This was conveyed by the Visual Communication Design Lecturer at UM Surabaya, Radius Setiyawan. According to him, there are three things that universities must focus on amidst the rapid advancement of AI. 

The Emergence of New Plagiarism Practices

Plagiarism is one of the impacts that will arise after the introduction of Chat Generative Pre Trained Transformer (GPT). This GPT chat is able to collect data from many sources quickly. 

Radius said that this could reduce the role of education substantially. Students who use GPT Chat to do assignments will tend to be lazy and put less effort because of the sophistication of this technology. 

"Of course, if this is not a concern for lecturers and institutions, the presence of AI will reduce the role of education in promoting hard work and a critical attitude. Efforts to build an intellectual ethos will clearly be disrupted. "As a result, students no longer try and tend to be lazy about carrying out written studies using correct scientific methods," explained Radius, quoted from the UM Surabaya website, Monday (7/8/2023). 

Shock Future

According to Radius, the next impact of using AI is a future shock. In the world of education, AI can cause problems of future shock or failure to face new phenomena today or in the future. 

Therefore, lecturers are required to be able to understand digital native patterns. Currently, lecturers must be able to see new opportunities and create innovative solutions that change the way they interact, work and carry out activities in the world of education. 

"This condition will certainly trigger concern, however, the rapid development of technology cannot be prevented, so lecturers in universities must really understand technological developments and the behavior of students who are digital natives," he said. 

There is a Need for Adaptation in Educational Institutions

The sophistication of AI also requires educational institutions to be able to adapt in seeing learning innovations. According to Radius, adaptation of educational institutions is very important in maximizing learning. 

Furthermore, Radius said that universities need to create and adapt curricula that are able to respond to technological developments by reinventing methods and teaching, of course with the support of all education stakeholders. 

"Lecturers and students must have adequate training and access to utilize AI technology appropriately without reducing the function of education," concluded Radius.

Kecerdasan buatan atau Artificial Intelligence (AI) memiliki banyak manfaat dalam memudahkan pekerjaan manusia. Namun, di sisi lain penggunaan AI memiliki dampak buruk yang membahayakan pengguna.

Bagaimana tidak, saat ini AI bisa diakses secara gratis sehingga penggunanya semakin bertambah banyak. Ancaman serius penggunaan AI pun bisa menyerang dunia pendidikan.

Hal tersebut seperti yang disampaikan oleh Dosen Desain Komunikasi Visual UM Surabaya, Radius Setiyawan. Menurutnya, terdapat tiga hal yang harus menjadi fokus perguruan tinggi di tengah melesatnya kecanggihan AI.

Munculnya Praktik Plagiarisme Baru

Plagiarisme menjadi salah satu dampak yang akan banyak muncul setelah adanya Chat Generative Pre Trained Transformer (GPT). Chat GPT ini mampu mengumpulkan data-data dari banyak sumber secara cepat.

Radius mengatakan bahwa hal ini bisa mereduksi peran pendidikan secara substansial. Mahasiswa yang menggunakan Chat GPT untuk mengerjakan tugas akan cenderung malas dan kurang berusaha karena adanya kecanggihan teknologi ini.

"Tentunya, jika hal ini tidak menjadi perhatian dosen dan institusi, kehadiran AI akan mereduksi peran pendidikan dalam mengupayakan kerja keras dan sikap kritis. Upaya membangun etos intelektual jelas akan terganggu. Akibatnya mahasiswa tidak lagi berusaha dan cenderung malas untuk melakukan kajian tulisan dengan metode ilmiah yang benar" terang Radius, dikutip dari laman UM Surabaya, Senin (7/8/2023).

Shock Future

Dampak penggunaan AI berikutnya menurut Radius adalah adanya shock future. Dalam dunia pendidikan, AI bisa menimbulkan masalah shock future atau kegagapan dalam menghadapi fenomena baru hari ini atau yang akan datang.

Oleh karena itu, dosen dituntut untuk bisa memahami pola digital native. Saat ini dosen harus bisa melihat peluang baru dan menciptakan solusi inovatif yang mengubah cara berinteraksi, bekerja, dan menjalani aktivitas dalam dunia pendidikan.

"Kondisi ini tentu akan memicu kekhawatiran, namun bagaimanapun perkembangan teknologi yang berkembang secara pesat tidak bisa dicegah, sehingga dosen di perguruan tinggi harus benar-benar memahami perkembangan teknologi dan perilaku mahasiswa adalah digital native," katanya.

Perlu Adanya Adaptasi di Institusi Pendidikan

Kecanggihan AI ini pun menuntut lembaga atau institusi pendidikan untuk mampu beradaptasi dalam melihat inovasi pembelajaran. Menurut Radius, adaptasi institusi pendidikan sangat penting dalam memaksimalkan pembelajaran.

Lebih lanjut, Radius menyebut perguruan tinggi perlu membuat dan beradaptasi terkait kurikulum yang mampu merespons perkembangan teknologi dengan menemukan kembali dari segi metode dan pengajaran, tentu dengan dukungan semua stakeholder pendidikan.

"Dosen dan mahasiswa harus punya pelatihan dan akses yang memadai untuk memanfaatkan teknologi AI dengan tepat tanpa mereduksi fungsi pendidikan," pungkas Radius.
