Elon Musk: AI Sophistication Is Humanity's Biggest Threat, Could Trigger Mass Layoffs
Elon Musk warns of the risk of using artificial intelligence which will replace human jobs in the future.
LONDON – Famous billionaire Elon Musk warned of the dangers and risks of allowing artificial intelligence (AI) technology to become widespread in various sectors of life.
He said AI technology could threaten millions of jobs around the world in the future.
He conveyed this warning in an interview with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak along with world leaders and technology executives at a consensus event regarding the risks posed by AI.
During the meeting, Musk acknowledged that the capabilities of AI technology embedded in a number of industries could accelerate company productivity efficiency, thereby encouraging companies to save operational costs.
However, the emergence of AI has the potential to trigger a wave of ongoing employee cuts in the technology industry. Considering that so far there have been more than 800 companies that have switched to AI technology.
One of them is International Business Machines Corp, or what is often called IBM, which has stopped recruiting 7,800 workers in the back office division during 2023, after recruiting thousands of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
Followed by the cloud storage company Dropbox Inc which also carried out layoffs by reducing its global workforce by 16 percent or around 500 staff after the company adopted sophisticated Artificial Intelligence technology to help the company carry out a number of jobs.
“There will come a time when there is no need for work. "You can have a job if you want to have a job for personal satisfaction, but AI will be able to do everything," said Musk, as reported by The Channel News Asia.
When asked by Rishi Sunak what the government should do to manage and mitigate the impact of AI, Elon Musk emphasized that government intervention needs to be done to manage and mitigate the impact of AI.
Before the threat of mass AI layoffs haunted world workers, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) had warned global workers in developed and developing countries to prepare for a wave of layoffs.
In line with the OECD, economist David Autor, who conducted a study related to AI adoption, explained that 60 percent of workers in the future will face massive layoffs.
This warning was issued because a number of world companies have flocked to adopt sophisticated Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology rather than recruiting employees.

Dia mengatakan, teknologi AI dapat mengancam jutaan pekerjaan warga dunia di masa datang .
Peringatan tersebut dia sampaikan dalam wawancaranya bersama Perdana Menteri Inggris Rishi Sunak beserta para pemimpin dunia dan para eksekutif teknologi dalam acara konsensus mengenai risiko yang ditimbulkan oleh AI.
Dalam pertemuan tersebut Musk mengakui bahwa kemampuan teknologi AI yang disematkan ke sejumlah industri dapat mempercepat efisiensi produktivitas perusahaan sehingga memacu perusahaan dapat menghemat biaya operasional.
Namun kemunculan AI ini berpotensi memicu gelombang pemangkasan karyawan yang terus berlanjut di industri teknologi. Mengingat sejauh ini sudah ada lebih dari 800 perusahaan yang telah beralih ke teknologi AI.
Salah satunya International Business Machines Corp atau yang kerap disapa IBM yang telah menghentikan rekrutmen pada 7.800 pekerja di divisi back office selama tahun 2023, usai merekrut ribuan teknologi kecerdasan buatan atau artificial intelligence (AI).
Disusul perusahaan penyimpanan cloud Dropbox Inc yang turut melakukan PHK dengan mengurangi pekerja globalnya sebesar 16 persen atau sekitar 500 staff pasca perusahaan mengadopsi kecanggihan teknologi Artificial Intelligence untuk membantu perusahaan melakukan sejumlah pekerjaan.
“Akan tiba saatnya dimana tidak diperlukan pekerjaan. Anda dapat memiliki pekerjaan jika Anda ingin memiliki pekerjaan untuk kepuasan pribadi, namun AI akan mampu melakukan segalanya,” kata Musk, sebagaimana dilansir dari The Channel News Asia.
Ketika ditanya oleh Rishi Sunak apa yang harus dilakukan pemerintah untuk mengelola dan memitigasi dampak dari AI, Elon Musk menegaskan bahwa intervensi pemerintah perlu dilakukan untuk mengelola dan memitigasi dampak dari AI.
Sebelum ancaman PHK akibat AI massal menghantui pekerja dunia, Organisasi untuk Kerja Sama dan Pembangunan Ekonomi (OECD) telah memperingatkan para pekerja global di negara maju dan berkembang untuk bersiap menghadapi gelombang PHK.
Senada dengan OECD, ekonom David Autor yang sempat melakukan studi terkait adopsi AI menjelaskan bahwa 60 persen pekerja di masa depan akan menghadapi badai PHK secara besar – besaran.
Peringatan ini dilontarkan lantaran sejumlah perusahaan dunia telah berbondong - bondong memilih mengadopsi kecanggihan teknologi Artificial Intelligence (AI) ketimbang melakukan rekrutmen karyawan.
