Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Joe Biden's government has opened the way for Taiwam to send chips to China.

Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC has received a 'waiver extension' from the United States to supply US chip equipment to the company's factories in China. This statement was made by Taiwan's Minister of Economy Wang Mei-hua.

Last October, the Biden administration issued a series of export controls, including measures to cut off China's access to certain chips made anywhere in the world with US equipment.
This policy expands the reach of efforts to slow Beijing's technological and military progress, as quoted by Reuters, Friday (13/10/2023).

The South Korean government said that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix would be allowed to supply US chip equipment to their factories in China indefinitely and without separate approval from the US.

TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, said last year that it had been granted a one-year permit by the United States to cover its factory in Nanjing, China, which makes 28-nanometer chips.

Wang told reporters that he understood that the waiver had been extended to TSMC as well, although he did not provide details.
The ministry referred further questions to TSMC, which did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. The company is in a quiet period ahead of its third-quarter earnings release next week.
