Google recently announced that it is improving Android's Play Protect malware protection system. This update is enhanced to help the system recognize that malicious applications can change their identification features, thereby avoiding security detection.
“These improvements will help better protect users against malicious polymorphic apps that leverage various methods, such as AI, to change to avoid detection,” read a Google post on its blog.
Quoting from The Verge, Saturday (21/10/2023), this update is in line with the increase in polymorphic malware which is more difficult for Google's system to detect.
For this reason, with this new system, Play Protect not only checks newly installed Android apps based on scanning intelligence and using machine learning techniques, but also recommends scanning of apps on the device in real-time.
After code-level evaluation, Google will also notify users to confirm whether an app appears safe or potentially dangerous.
Google plans to bring this new scanning feature in certain countries. The first country to receive this feature is India, while the global rollout will reportedly take place in the next few months.
Please note, Google Play Protect is available on every Android device equipped with Google Play Services. Currently, Play Protect scans 125 billion apps every day to prevent the spread of malware and unwanted software.
However, despite these safeguards, researchers continue to encounter Android malware. Google also notes links to malicious app downloads are often shared via ephemeral sources, such as chat apps.

Untuk itu, dengan sistem baru ini, Play Protect tidak hanya memeriksa aplikasi Android yang baru dipasang berdasarkan kecerdasan pemindaian dan menggunakan teknik machine learning, melainkan juga merekomendasikan pemindaian aplikasi pada perangkat secara real-time.
Setelah evaluasi tingkat kode, Google juga akan memberi tahu pengguna untuk mengonfirmasi apakah suatu aplikasi terlihat aman atau berpotensi berbahaya.
Rencananya, Google akan menghadirkan fitur pemindaian baru ini di negara tertentu. Negara pertama yang menerima fitur ini adalah India, sedangkan peluncuran secara global dikabarkan akan dilakukan dalam beberapa bulan mendatang.
Perlu diketahui, Google Play Protect tersedia di setiap perangkat Android yang dilengkapi dengan Layanan Google Play. Saat ini, Play Protect telah memindai 125 miliar aplikasi setiap harinya untuk mencegah penyebaran malware dan software yang tidak diinginkan.
Namun, meskipun terdapat perlindungan, para peneliti masih terus menemukan adanya malware Android. Google juga mencatat tautan ke unduhan aplikasi berbahaya sering kali dibagikan melalui sumber sementara, seperti aplikasi chatting.
