Google is again laying off employees. Specifically, the employees who were cut filled the news division.
According to a spokesperson for the Alphabet Workers Union, an estimated 40 to 45 employees were laid off.
On the other hand, a Google spokesperson confirmed the news of the layoffs. However, the exact number was not disclosed further. He said there were still hundreds of employees working in the division.

"We have made some internal changes to make things simpler. Some employees have been impacted. Meanwhile, these layoffs occurred in the heat of the war between Israel and Hamas which has claimed thousands of lives since last October 7. These two wars have triggered a surge in the spread of hoax information or news on websites. For this reason, Google is a mainstay for users to find the latest news.
The spread of hoax news has prompted a number of figures to urge Google to better filter out fake news. One of them, European Union industry chief Thierry Breton. Thierry Breton asked several companies, including Google, to take firmer steps to remove hoax news as war conflicts escalate.
Specifically, Breton sent a letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai and YouTube CEO Neal Mohan and reminded them of content moderation requirements under the European Union's Digital Services Act.
"This internal change has no impact on hoax news and the quality of our information at News," said the spokesperson when asked to respond.
The reduction in employees at Google News comes after layoffs were carried out in many parts of the company this year. In January, Google announced it would cut 12,000 employees, affecting about 6% of its workforce. Last month, the company also cut hundreds of positions in its recruiting division.

Menurut Juru Bicara Serikat Pekerja Alphabet, diperkirakan sebanyak 40 sampai 45 karyawan yang diberhentikan.
Di sisi lain, Juru Bicara Google membenarkan kabar PHK tersebut. Namun, tidak membeberkan lebih lanjut jumlah pastinya. Dia bilang, masih ada ratusan karyawan yang bekerja di divisi tersebut.

Seperti diketahui, Google Berita menyajikan link atau tautan artikel dari ribuan media, penerbit, hingga majalah online. Pengguna bisa mencari dan menemukan berita sesuai dengan topik tertentu.
Sementara itu, PHK ini terjadi di tengah panasnya perang antara Israel dan Hamas yang telah merenggut ribuan nyawa sejak 7 Oktober lalu. Kedua perang tersebut telah memicu lonjakan penyebaran informasi atau berita hoaks di website. Untuk itu, Google menjadi andalan pengguna untuk menemukan berita terkini.
Penyebaran berita hoaks ini memicu sejumlah tokoh agar Google bisa lebih menyaring berita bohong. Salah satunya, Kepala industri Uni Eropa Thierry Breton. Thierry Breton meminta beberapa perusahaan, termasuk Google agar mengambil langkah lebih tegas untuk menghapus berita hoaks saat konflik perang semakin panas.
Secara khusus, Breton mengirimkan surat kepada CEO Google Sundar Pichai dan CEO YouTube Neal Mohan dan mengingatkan mereka tentang persyaratan moderasi konten berdasarkan Undang- Undang Layanan Digital Uni Eropa.
"Perubahan internal ini tidak berdampak pada berita hoaks dan kualitas informasi kami di News," kata Juru Bicara tersebut saat diminta untuk menanggapi.
Pengurangan karyawan di Google News terjadi setelah PHK yang dilakukan di banyak bagian perusahaan pada tahun ini. Pada bulan Januari, Google mengumumkan akan memangkas 12.000 karyawan sehingga mempengaruhi sekitar 6% dari angkatan karyawan. Bulan lalu, perusahaan tersebut juga memutus ratusan posisi di divisi perekrutannya.
