CAIRO - Ethiopia has confirmed that it has finished filling the reservoir at its new giant dam, which uses water from the Nile River. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (Gerd) could trigger a war between Ethiopia and Egypt.
Understandably, the Nile River is considered the source of life for the Egyptian people. When the Nile River's water supply is reduced because of the dam, Egypt will be very angry.
Here are 4 reasons why the Ethiopian dam could trigger a new war in Africa.
1. The size of the City of London

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (Gerd) is on a tributary of the Blue Nile in the northern Ethiopian highlands, where 85% of the Nile's water flows.
Gerd is located 19 miles (30 km) south of the border with Sudan and is the largest hydroelectric dam project in Africa. It is over a mile long and 145m high.
It's not finished yet, but construction has taken 12 years.
The reservoir behind this USD 4.2 billion dam has a surface area the size of Greater London.
2. Become a source of electricity for Ethiopia

Ethiopia wants the dam to generate electricity for the 60% of its population who currently have no electricity supply.
It is hoped that this will ultimately double Ethiopia's electricity production, providing a constant supply of electricity to businesses and boosting development.
The project could also provide electricity to neighboring countries including Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, Djibouti and Eritrea.
3. Egypt is worried that the dam will reduce the water flow of the Nile River

Maklum, Sungai Nil dianggap sebagai sumber kehidupan rakyat Mesir. Ketika pasokan air Sungai Nil berkurang karena bendungan tersebut, maka Mesir akan sangat marah.

1. Seluas Kota London

Bendungan Renaisans Besar Ethiopia (Gerd) berada di anak sungai Nil Biru di dataran tinggi Etiopia utara, tempat 85% air Sungai Nil mengalir.
Gerd terletak 19 mil (30 km) selatan perbatasan dengan Sudan dan merupakan proyek bendungan pembangkit listrik tenaga air terbesar di Afrika. Panjangnya lebih dari satu mil dan tinggi 145m.
Memang belum rampung, tapi pembangunannya sudah memakan waktu 12 tahun.
Waduk di belakang bendungan senilai USD4,2 miliar ini memiliki luas permukaan sebesar London Raya.
2. Menjadi Sumber Listrik Bagi Ethiopia

Ethiopia ingin bendungan itu dapat menghasilkan listrik bagi 60% penduduknya yang saat ini tidak mempunyai pasokan listrik.
Diharapkan hal ini pada akhirnya akan melipatgandakan produksi listrik Ethiopia, menyediakan pasokan listrik yang konstan bagi dunia usaha dan meningkatkan pembangunan.
Proyek ini juga dapat menyediakan listrik untuk negara-negara tetangga termasuk Sudan, Sudan Selatan, Kenya, Djibouti dan Eritrea.
3. Mesir Khawatir Bendungan Akan Mengurangi Debit Air Sungai Nil
