India Becomes Bharat, Turkey & 13 RI Neighbors Also Change Names

 - Shocking news comes from India, where the local government plans to change the name of the country to Bharat. This replacement will be carried out in a special parliamentary session on 18-22 September 2023. 

Indian media, Economic Times quoting Times Now, reported that Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi is likely to bring a resolution to change India's official name to Bharat during a special session of parliament. 

There is a reason why the Indian government wants to change its name to Bharat. It was revealed after the invitation to the G20 Summit dinner sent by President Droupadi Murmu, mentioning his position as 'President of Bharat' and not 'President of India'. 

This country with a population of more than 1.4 billion people is actually officially known by two names, namely India and Bharat. However, Indian names are more commonly used, both domestically and abroad. 

Meanwhile, according to Al Jazeera, the reason for the Indian government to do this is as a form of eradicating colonialism. This has actually been done on several street and regional names in India. 

The name Bharat is an ancient Sanskrit word, which many historians believe derives from early Hindu texts. The word Bharat also basically means India in Hindi. 

Please note, the name 'Bharat' itself is actually not something new because it has been listed in the constitution. So, in the Indian constitution there are two references to the name of the country, namely India which is used in English and Bharat which is used in Hindi. 

There is also 'Hindustan' to refer to India in Urdu which means "Land of Hindus". In everyday life, these three names are used officially by the community. 

On the other hand, the name change was strongly supported by BJP officials and politicians who are now in power in India. They argue that the name India was introduced by British colonialists and is a 'symbol of slavery'. 

Apart from India, which other countries have changed their names? 

Despite India's plan to change its name to Bharat, many countries have already changed their names before India. There are many reasons for the government or local authorities to change the name of their country, starting from reasons not to be hit by 'bad luck', rebranding, there are even reasons that are similar to animal names. 

So what countries have changed their names? Here are the countries and the reasons why they changed their names. 

1. Turkiye (formerly Turkey)

Turkey or Turki officially changed its name internationally to Turkiye. The change in the country's name was approved by the United Nations (UN) on Wednesday, June 1, 2022. 

Quoting CNN, UN Spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric stated that the UN accepted the change of name to Turkiye. The official change to Turkiye occurred after the UN received an official request for a name change from the Turkish Government, and confirmed that the document was valid. 

Turkiye Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the name change was carried out to improve the country's branding or brand value. 

However, there is a funny reason why Turkey's name became Turkiye. The term Turkey itself is the English word for turkey. In fact, the term Turkey is also sometimes used as a ridiculous and negative term with respect to the word in English. 

The name change is also seen as an attempt to change the country's image and is no longer associated with the most famous turkey in the United States (US) as a traditional Thanksgiving Day menu at the end of November. 

2. Iran (formerly Persian)

According to history, the proposal to change the name of Persian to Iran was influenced by the Iranian Ambassador to Germany who was influenced by the Nazis. 

Additionally, in Greek writings, Iran is referred to as Persia. Even though in some circles there are many objections, this step to change the name is considered appropriate because it can change public perception. Until now, it can be loosely referred to as Iran. 

As for Persia, it officially changed to Iran, namely on March 21, 1935, at which time, the Shah Reza Pahlavi dynasty was still in charge of Persia.

3. Myanmar (formerly Burma)

Myanmar is a country that is known in English by two names, namely Myanmar and Burma. 

However, the military Junta government changed the name of 'Burma' to "Myanmar" in 1989 after hundreds of people were killed in an attempt to suppress a popular uprising. The name change was recognized by the UN and several countries such as France and Japan. 

4. Cambodia (formerly Kampuchea)

This land of peace was formerly known as Kampuchea. The fact is that Cambodia has changed its name several times. 

In 1953-1970, this country was named the Kingdom of Cambodia. Then, in 1970-1975 it was renamed the Khmer Republic. 

When the 1975-1979 Communist government took place, Cambodia was called Democratic Kampuchea. In 1989-1993, under UN transitional authority, it became the country of Cambodia. One year later, after the restoration of the monarchy in 1994, Cambodia was transformed into the kingdom of Cambodia. 

5. Thailand (formerly Siam)

For several centuries, the Thai region was ruled by a king known as Siam. After becoming a constitutional monarchy in 1939, the new name was pronounced as Prathet Thai which means country of the free. 

In 1939, on the idea of ​​the then prime minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram, the reigning king finally changed the name of his country after becoming a constitutional monarchy. 

6. Jordan (Formerly Transjordan)

This country in the Middle East has actually been recognized since September 1922. This is because it received a mandate from British troops and in 1946 Transjordan was granted independence by Britain. 

Then in 1946, the authorities decided to change the name of this country to the Hashimiyah Kingdom of Transjordan. 

Then in 1949, the name changed to Hashimiyah Kingdom of Jordan or better known as Jordan. This is because the country has been ruled since the Hashimiyah Kingdom by the Hashimiyah dynasty. 

Hashimiyah itself refers to the royal family and descendants, while Jordan is another name that refers to a geographical area called the Jordan River. 

7. The Netherlands (Formerly Holland)

It can be said that the name Netherlands or Netherlands itself was replaced recently, namely in January 2020. Officially, Holland is united with the Netherlands. Even though in Indonesia itself, the Dutch name has been known for a long time.

8. Ethiopia (formerly Abyssinia)

The name Abyssinia was changed to Ethiopia during World War II by Hailesulasie, King X of Ethiopia. The term Abyssinia originates from the founding of the Solomon dynasty in 1270 which eventually became the identity of the name of the country before it changed to Ethiopia

The reason Abyssinia changed its name to Ethiopia was due to an agreement between Italy and Abyssinia made after the failed Italian invasion. The name given in the agreement is Ethiopia. 

9. Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon)

From 1815 to 1948 the name of the country Ceylon was well known under British rule. Ceylon comes from the word Ceilao, a state under Portuguese rule in modern Sri Lanka. 

Finally, the name Sri Lanka was coined in the early 20th century and officially raised the name of the Republic of Sri Lanka in 1972 and briefly changed its name to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in 1978. 

10. Ireland (Formerly the Irish Free State)

One of the reasons a country changes its name is to get rid of 'bitter' memories related to the country. 

One country that does this is Ireland. In 1937, Ireland changed its name to remove all ties with the country which is famous for its Big Ben, namely England after a fierce war for 2 years. 

11. Democratic Republic of the Congo (Formerly Zaire)

At the beginning of independence in 1960, this country agreed to give the name Republic of the Congo. Then, from 1965 to 1971 the Republic of Congo changed its name to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in 1971 the then President, Mobutu Sese Seko, again changed its name to the Republic of Zaire. 

The Sovereign National Congress in 1922 planned to change the name back to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1992. However, realization did not come until 1977 after the fall of the Mobutu Government. 

12. Czechia/Czech (Formerly Czech Republic)

Another country that has recently changed its name is the Czech Republic, in 2016 the Czech Republic changed its country name to Czechia with the reason to shorten the mention of the country in international relations and to become a means of promoting the country. 

Even though it has been changed to Czechia, people still tend to refer to the country as the Czech Republic. 

13. Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia)

The name Rhodesia is taken from the name of Cecil John Rhodes, a recognized Kingdom builder. 

14. Eswatini (formerly Swaziland)

In 2018, under the leadership of King Mswati II, Swaziland's name was changed to Eswatini to get rid of memories of colonialism in the past. 

The king said that the name Swaziland seemed similar to Switzerland and made many people confused about the two countries. 

India Jadi Bharat, Turki & 13 Tetangga RI Ini Juga Ganti Nama

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Kabar mengejutkan datang dari India, di mana pemerintah setempat berencana mengganti nama negaranya menjadi Bharat. Pergantian ini akan dilakukan dalam sidang khusus parlemen pada 18-22 September 2023 mendatang.

Media India, Economic Times yang mengutip Times Now, memuat Perdana Menteri (PM) Narendra Modi kemungkinan akan membawa resolusi mengubah nama resmi India ke Bharat selama sidang khusus parlemen.

Ada alasan mengapa pemerintah India ingin mengganti namanya menjadi Bharat. Terungkap setelah undangan jamuan makan malam KTT G20 yang dikirimkan Presiden Droupadi Murmu, menyebutkan jabatannya sebagai 'Presiden Bharat' bukan 'Presiden India'.

Negara dengan penduduk lebih dari 1,4 miliar jiwa ini sebenarnya secara resmi dikenal dengan dua nama, yakni India dan Bharat. Namun, nama India lebih umum digunakan, baik di dalam negeri maupun di luar negeri.

Sedangkan menurut Al Jazeera, alasan pemerintah India melakukan itu sebagai bentuk penghapusan kolonialisme. Hal itu pun sebenarnya sudah dilakukan di beberapa nama jalan dan daerah di India.

Nama Bharat merupakan kata Sanskerta kuno, yang diyakini oleh banyak sejarawan berasal dari teks-teks Hindu awal. Kata Bharat pada dasarnya juga berarti India dalam bahasa Hindi.

Perlu diketahui, nama 'Bharat' sendiri sebenarnya bukan sesuatu yang baru karena sudah tercantum di konstitusi. Jadi, pada konstitusi India terdapat dua rujukan penyebut nama negara, yakni India yang digunakan dalam bahasa Inggris dan Bharat yang diperuntukkan dalam bahasa Hindi.

Ada juga 'Hindustan' untuk merujuk India dalam bahasa Urdu yang artinya "Tanah umat Hindu". Di keseharian, ketiga nama tersebut dipakai secara resmi oleh masyarakat.

Di lain sisi, Perubahan nama itu didukung kuat oleh para pejabat dan politisi BJP yang kini berkuasa di India. Mereka berpendapat bahwa nama India diperkenalkan oleh kolonial Inggris dan merupakan 'simbol perbudakan'.

Selain India, Negara Mana Lagi yang Sudah Berganti Nama?

Terlepas dari rencana India berganti nama menjadi Bharat, banyak negara yang sudah terlebih dahulu mengganti namanya sebelum India. Ada banyak alasan pemerintah atau otoritas setempat mengganti nama negaranya, mulai dari alasan agar tidak tertimpa 'sial', rebranding, bahkan ada yang beralasan mirip dengan nama hewan.

Lalu apa saja negara-negara yang sudah mengganti namanya? Berikut negara-negaranya dan alasan mengapa mengganti namanya.

1. Turkiye (Sebelumnya Turkey)

Turkey atau Turki resmi berganti nama secara internasional menjadi Turkiye. Perubahan nama negara tersebut telah disetujui oleh Badan Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa (PBB) pada Rabu, 1 Juni 2022.

Mengutip CNN, Juru Bicara PBB, Stephane Dujarric menyatakan bahwa PBB menerima perubahan nama menjadi Turkiye. Resmi bergantinya menjadi Turkiye terjadi setelah PBB menerima permintaan resmi pergantian nama dari Pemerintah Turki, serta memastikan bahwa dokumen tersebut sah.

Menteri Luar Negeri Turkiye, Mevlut Cavusoglu mengatakan, pergantian nama dilakukan untuk meningkatkan branding atau nilai merek (brand value) negara tersebut.

Namun, ada alasan lucu mengapa nama Turkey menjadi Turkiye. Istilah Turkey sendiri merupakan bahasa Inggris dari ayam kalkun. Bahkan, istilah Turkey juga terkadang digunakan untuk istilah konyol dan negatif berkenaan dengan kata tersebut dalam bahasa Inggris.

Penggantian nama dilihat juga sebagai upaya untuk mengubah citra negara tersebut dan tidak lagi dikaitkan dengan ayam kalkun yang paling terkenal di Amerika Serikat (AS) menjadi menu tradisional Thanksgiving Day di akhir November.

2. Iran (Dahulu Persia)

Menurut sejarah, usulan pergantian nama Persia menjadi di Iran dipengaruhi oleh Duta Besar Iran untuk Jerman yang dipengaruhi oleh Nazi.

Selain itu, dalam tulisan Yunani, Iran disebut sebagai Persia. Walaupun di beberapa kalangan terdapat banyak hal kontra, langkah perubahan nama ini dinilai tepat karena dapat mengubah persepsi masyarakat. Hingga saat ini, dapat secara bebas disebut sebagai Iran.

Adapun Persia resmi berganti menjadi Iran yakni pada 21 Maret 1935, di mana saat itu, Dinasti Shah Reza Pahlavi masih menjabat Persia.

Shah pun mengubahnya menjadi Iran. Dengan transformasi nama Persia menjadi Iran, Shah Reza Pahlavi menginginkan agar seluruh etnis atau keturunan di Persia bisa bersatu. Demikian seperti dimuat Mapstor.com.

Nama Persia dianggap membuat rakyat kala itu terkotak-kotak. Antara etnis Kurds dan Turds masih belum bersatu secara utuh dan memiliki rasa kebersamaan. Untuk itu, nama Iran diharapkan bisa menyatukan mereka.

Selain itu, nama Persia dianggap memiliki konotasi yang kurang baik, bisa diartikan sebagai sebuah hal yang 'lemah' dan bisa menghambat perkembangan dinasti di tengah-tengah ancaman imperialisme dari Eropa.

Sementara nama 'Iran' yang diartikan 'tanah bangsa Arya' dianggap sebagai representasi dari sebuah kekuatan dan kemakmuran. Juga sebagai simbol kebangkitan dan pembangkit semangat nasionalisme seluruh rakyat.

3. Myanmar (Dahulu Burma)

Myanmar merupakan salah satu negara yang dalam bahasa Inggris dikenal dengan dua nama yakni Myanmar dan Burma.

Namun, pemerintahan Junta militer mengubah nama 'Burma' menjadi "Myanmar" pada 1989 setelah ratusan orang terbunuh dalam upaya untuk menekan pemberontakan rakyat. Perubahan nama tersebut diakui oleh PBB dan beberapa negara seperti Prancis dan Jepang.

4. Kamboja (Dahulu Kampuchea)

Negara Tanah Kedamaian ini dulunya dikenal dengan nama Kampuchea. Faktanya negara Kamboja sempat berganti nama beberapa kali.

Pada tahun 1953-1970, negara ini bernama Kerajaan Kamboja. Lalu, pada 1970-1975 dinamai sebagai Republik Khmer.

Saat pemerintahan Komunis 1975-1979 berlangsung, Kamboja disebut sebagai Kampuchea Demokratik. Pada 1989-1993 di bawah otoritas transisi PBB, berubah menjadi negara Kamboja. Satu tahun kemudian, pasca pemulihan monarki 1994, Kamboja berganti menjadi kerajaan Kamboja.

5. Thailand (Dahulu Siam)

Selama beberapa abad, wilayah Thailand diperintah oleh seorang raja yang dikenal sebagai Siam. Setelah menjadi negara monarki konstitusional pada tahun 1939, nama baru tersebut diucapkan sebagai Prathet Thai yang berarti negara orang-orang bebas.

Pada 1939, atas ide dari Plaek Phibunsongkhram perdana menteri yang menjabat saat itu, raja yang memerintah akhirnya mengubah nama negaranya setelah menjadi monarki konstitusional.

6. Yordania (Dahulu Transyordania)

Negara di Timur Tengah ini sebenarnya sudah diakui sejak September 1922. Hal ini karena sudah mendapat mandat dari pasukan Inggris dan 1946 Transyordania diberikan kemerdekaan oleh Inggris.

Lalu pada 1946, pihak berwenang memutuskan untuk merubah nama negara ini menjadi Kerajaan Hashimiyah Transyordania.

Kemudian pada 1949, namanya berubah menjadi Kerajaan Hasyimiyah Jordania atau lebih dikenal dengan nama Yordania. Hal ini karena negara itu sudah diperintah sejak Kerajaan Hashimiyah oleh Dinasti Hasyimiyah.

Hashimiyah sendiri merujuk kepada para keluarga dan keturunan kerajaan, sedangkan Yordania adalah nama lain yang merujuk kepada sebuah kawasan geografis bernama Sungai Yordania.

7. Belanda (Sebelumnya Holland)

Bisa dikatakan bahwa nama Belanda atau Netherlands sendiri baru tergantikan belum lama ini, yakni pada Januari 2020 lalu. Secara resmi, Holland bersatu dengan Netherlands. Padahal di Indonesia sendiri, nama Belanda sudah dikenal sejak lama.

Walaupun dalam bahasa Inggris memiliki kata yang berbeda, dalam bahasa Indonesia memiliki arti yang sama yaitu Belanda. Tidak hanya mengganti namanya secara resmi, Belanda turut mengubah nama tim sepak bola mereka.

8. Ethiopia (Dahulu Abyssinia)

Nama Abyssinia diubah menjadi Ethiopia pada Perang Dunia II oleh Hailesilasie, Raja X Ethiopia. Istilah Abyssinia berawal dari pendirian dinasti Solomon pada tahun 1270 yang akhirnya menjadi identitas nama negara tersebut sebelum berubah menjadi Ethiopia

Alasan Abyssinia berganti nama menjadi Ethiopia yakni karena adanya perjanjian antara Italia dan Abyssinia yang dibuat setelah invasi Italia yang gagal. Nama yang diberikan dalam perjanjian itu adalah Etiopia.

9. Sri Lanka (Dahulu Ceylon)

Dari tahun 1815 hingga 1948 nama negara Ceylon terkenal di bawah pemerintahan Inggris. Ceylon berasal dari kata Ceilao, sebuah negara di bawah kekuasaan Portugis di Sri Lanka modern.

Akhirnya, nama Sri Lanka dicetuskan pada awal abad ke-20 dan secara resmi mengangkat nama Republik Sri Lanka pada 1972 dan sempat merubah namanya menjadi Republik Sosialis Demokratik Sri Lanka pada tahun 1978.

10. Irlandia (Dahulu Irish Free State)

Salah satu alasan suatu negara merubah namanya adalah untuk menghilangkan kenangan yang 'pahit' berkaitan dengan negaranya.

Salah satu negara yang melakukan ini adalah Irlandia. Di tahun 1937, Irlandia merubah namanya untuk menghapus seluruh ikatan dengan negara yang terkenal dengan Big Ben-nya yaitu Inggris setelah berperang secara sengit selama 2 tahun.

 

11. Republik Demokratik Kongo (Dahulu Zaire)

Pada awal kemerdekaan tahun 1960, negara ini sepakat untuk memberikan nama Republik Kongo. Lalu, dari tahun 1965 hingga 1971 Republik Kongo merubah namanya menjadi Republik Demokratik Kongo dan pada tahun 1971 Presiden yang saat itu menjabat yaitu Mobutu Sese Seko kembali mengganti namanya menjadi Republik Zaire.

Kongres Nasional Berdaulat pada tahun 1922 merencanakan untuk mengubah nama kembali menjadi Republik Demokratik Kongo pada 1992. Namun, realisasinya baru terjadi pada tahun 1977 setelah jatuhnya Pemerintahan Mobutu.

12. Czechia/Ceko (Dahulu Czech Republic)

Negara lain yang juga terbilang baru mengganti namanya adalah Republik Ceko, pada 2016 Czech Republic mengubah nama negaranya menjadi Czechia dengan alasan untuk mempersingkat penyebutan negara dalam pergaulan internasional dan menjadi salah satu sarana promosi negara.

Meski sudah diubah menjadi Czechia, orang-orang cenderung masih sering menyebut negara tersebut sebagai negara Republik Ceko.

13. Zimbabwe (Dahulu Rhodesia)

Sebelum kemerdekaan, Rhodesia Selatan merupakan nama resmi negara Zimbabwe. Tepat pada 1980, Rhodesia mendapat pengakuan resmi dengan nama Republik Zimbabwe, yang kemudian dipersingkat menjadi Negara Zimbabwe.

Nama Rhodesia diambil dari nama Cecil John Rhodes, seorang pembangun Kerajaan yang diakui.

14. Eswatini (Dahulu Swaziland)

Tahun 2018, di bawah kepemimpinan Raja Mswati II, nama Swaziland diganti menjadi Eswatini untuk menghilangkan kenangan kolonialisme di masa lalu.

Sang raja mengungkapkan nama Swaziland terkesan mirip dengan Switzerland dan membuat banyak orang bingung dengan dua negara tersebut.
