NEW YORK - The cold war between China and the United States is heating up, especially with the regulations limiting US technology exports to China.
However, Chinese technology companies are not standing still and are trying to meet semiconductor needs with impressive domestic solutions.
Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) company, HKUST Xunfei, announced cooperation with Huawei in an effort to overcome the chip crisis.
The company's founder, Liu Qingfeng, stated that Huawei has developed an AI GPU that is on par with Nvidia's A100. Apart from that, they also plan to launch a large language model (LLM) which will compete with GPT-4.
“This hardware will be very advanced and capable of running LLMs such as GPT-3 and GPT-4 with high performance.” said Liu Qingfeng as reported by SCMP, Monday (4/9/2023).
Although the details of the specifications have not been disclosed, this claim shows great potential for the Chinese AI chip market.
Currently, Nvidia's A100 chip is the second best AI GPU on the market, with Hopper hardware leading the way.
If these Chinese AI GPUs can live up to their claims, the Chinese market will likely turn to domestic products to meet their AI demand.
Meanwhile, HKUST Xunfei also announced plans to launch a new general-purpose large language model (LLM) in October.

NEW YORK - Perang dingin antara China dan Amerika Serikat semakin memanas, khususnya dengan aturan pembatasan ekspor teknologi AS ke China.
Namun, perusahaan teknologi china tidak tinggal diam dan berusaha memenuhi kebutuhan semikonduktor dengan solusi dalam negeri yang mengesankan.
Perusahaan kecerdasan buatan (AI) asal china, HKUST Xunfei, mengumumkan kerja sama dengan Huawei dalam upaya untuk mengatasi krisis chip.
Pendiri perusahaan, Liu Qingfeng, menyatakan bahwa Huawei telah mengembangkan GPU AI yang setara dengan A100 buatan Nvidia. Selain itu, mereka juga berencana meluncurkan model bahasa besar (LLM) yang akan bersaing dengan GPT-4.
“Perangkat keras ini akan sangat canggih dan mampu menjalankan LLM seperti GPT-3 dan GPT-4 dengan kinerja yang tinggi.” tutur Liu Qingfeng seperti dilansir SCMP, Senin (4/9/2023).
Meskipun detail spesifikasi belum diungkapkan, klaim ini menunjukkan potensi besar bagi pasar chip AI china.
Saat ini, chip A100 dari Nvidia merupakan GPU AI terbaik kedua di pasar, dengan perangkat keras Hopper menjadi yang terdepan.
Jika GPU AI China ini dapat memenuhi klaimnya, pasar china kemungkinan akan beralih ke produk dalam negeri untuk memenuhi permintaan AI mereka.
Sementara itu, HKUST Xunfei juga mengumumkan rencana meluncurkan model bahasa besar serba guna (LLM) baru pada oktober mendatang.
