WHAT INSPIRES ROMEO AND JULIET AND HOW IT CREATED

William Shakespeare's early play Romeo and Juliet is about the passion of two Italian adolescents from conflicting families. The play has to be composed between 1591 and 1596 by Shakespeare.

Romeo, a Montague, and Juliet, a Capulet, meet and kiss at a ball hosted by the Capulets. Romeo shouldn't be there, and Juliet's cousin Tybalt notices him and vows vengeance for the insult. Romeo infiltrates the Capulet orchard to see Juliet, and they confess their love for each other and plan to marry and live together. They secretly marry with the assistance of Juliet's nurse and Friar Laurence. Romeo is exiled from Verona when Tybalt murders his buddy Mercutio. Lord Capulet orders her daughter to wed Count Paris, Juliet's suitor, which leads her to take a potion to make her appear dead. Juliet murders herself with Romeo's dagger as Romeo consumes poison and passes away beside her. 

The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet (1562), a lengthy narrative poem by the English poet Arthur Brooke, served as Shakespeare's primary inspiration for the story. Brooke had based his work on a French tale translation by the Italian Matteo Bandello (1554). The Historia novellamente ritrovata di due nobili amanti is the first known literary account of Romeo and Juliet. It was released in 1530 by Luigi da Porto. 

We may now piece together how Romeo and Juliet came to be by doing so. In Vicenza, which was then a part of the Venetian Republic, Luigi da Porto was born in 1485 to one of Vicenza's most noble families. Peregrino, a Veronese archer who joined the Venetian army with Luigi da Porto as a knight, related a tale of two aristocratic lovers who perished due to their devotion. 

According to Peregrino, the story occurs between 1301 and 1304, during Bartolomeo della Scala's control of Verona. Dante Alighieri (Italian Poet) was sentenced to death in Florence around this time, so he fled to Verona for safety. Montecchi and Cappelletti are two of the families Dante names in the sixth chapter of the Purgatory as having participated in the battles between Guelphs and Ghibellines parties. 

On the other side, Luigi da Porto and Lucina Savorgnan del Monte from Udine were distant cousins. During a masquerade party, they fell in love. For permission to marry her, Luigi da Porto approaches her father. The uncle declines due to tensions between the two branches of the family. They separated since the two sections of the Savorgnan family had sympathies for opposing political ideologies. Family conflicts brought on by Lucina Savorgnan and Francesco Savorgnan's (nephew) political marriage.

Tommaso Guardati, also known as Masuccio Salernitano, was born in 1410. Luigi da Porto is said to have adapted his Mariotto and Ganozza tale. The Greek author, Xenophon of Ephesus, lived between the second and third centuries AD. The Ephesian Tale of Anthia and Habrocomes, also known as the Ephesiaka and one of the first novels and one of the inspirations for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, is his only surviving work. 

How much of Romeo and Juliet's story results from fantasy, and how much is fact? We will never be aware. It is a mystery why nothing lessens the attractiveness of a stirring and lovely tale but rather enhances it. It makes sense why so many artists have drawn to it.
