This noble religion provides guidance so that Muslims become individuals who are grateful for any gifts in the form of goodness that they get.
And among the forms of gratitude to Allah, is that a person should be good at thanking fellow human beings who have done good to him. Rasulullah shallallahu'alaihi wassalam said:
لاَ يَشْكُرُ اللَّهَ مَنْ لاَ يَشْكُرُ النَّاسَ
"It is not said to be grateful to Allah for who is ungrateful to humans." (Narrated by Abu Dawud)
Al Khatabi Rahimahullah when explaining the hadith above said: "The point is that Allah ta'ala does not accept the gratitude of a servant for the gifts He has given, if he is reluctant to thank the goodness of other people or deny their services (which are the waythe arrival of the gift).”[1]
Among the forms of gratitude to others is to reply with a prayer of kindness when receiving a gift or when getting a helping hand from them. A hadith states:
“And whoever does good to you, then repay (the good). If you are unable to repay his kindness, then pray for him." (Narrated by Baihaqi)
In another hadith:
فَادْعُوا لَهُ حَتَّى تَعْلَمُوا أَنْ قَدْ كَافَأْتُمُوهُ
"Pray until you know that you can be worthy of repaying his kindness." (Narrated by Abu Dawud)
The following are a selection of prayers that we read when we receive kindness in the form of food, especially if that food is used to break the fast in the current conditions.
𝗗𝗼𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗮
O Allah
"O Allah, give food to those who give me food and give drink to those who give me drink." (HR. Muslim)
𝗗𝗼’𝗮 𝗸𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗮
O Allah
"O Allah, bless the sustenance that You bestow upon them, forgive them and give mercy to them." (HR. Muslim)
𝗗𝗼’𝗮 𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮
God bless you
"Hopefully those who eat your food are good people, and may the noble angels bless you, and hopefully those who break their fast with you are people who are fasting." (Narrated by Ahmad)
𝗗𝗼’𝗮 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁
God bless you
"Hopefully those who break their iftar with you are people who are fasting, and those who eat your food are good people and may the angels pray for you." (Narrated by Ibn Majah)
𝗗𝗼’𝗮 𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮
اللَّهُمَّ جَمِّلْهُ
"O Allah, give him beauty."
𝗗𝗼’𝗮 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗺
Or you can also use the prayer that is usually used when receiving any kindness from Muslim brothers by saying: Jazakumullah khairan.
As stated in the hadith:
مَنْ صُنِعَ إِلَيْهِ مَعْرُوفٌ فَقَالَ لِفَاعِلِهِ جَزَاكَ اللَّهُ خَيْرًا فَقَدْ أَبْلَغَ فِى الثََّن
"Whoever is treated with a kindness, then he says to the culprit: "Jazakallah khairan (may Allah reward you with kindness), then indeed he has truly exalted praise." (Narrated by Tirmidhi)
Of the five types of prayer above, which one do you use when receiving takjil iftar from other people?
