🏆⚽ Ghana 🇬🇭 0-2 🇺🇾 Uruguay
Tears of despair for Uruguay's players as they bow out of the World Cup in Qatar, after winning 2-0 against Ghana in their last Group H game, Dec. 2, 2022.
Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored twice in six first-half minutes as a resurgent Uruguay beat Ghana 2-0 in the World Cup on Friday only to crash out of the tournament agonizingly after South Korea's shock win over Portugal.
In Group H deciders that went right down to the wire, Uruguay had one foot in the last 16 before South Korea scored in stoppage time and went through by virtue of scoring one goal more than the South Americans over its three matches.
Uruguay had left itself with a mountain to climb, with its cast of big-name strikers unable to find the net in the opening games, leading to its first group-stage exit in two decades.
Uruguay celebrates after defeating Ghana 2-0 in its final Group H game of the World Cup in Qatar, December 2, 2022. Despite winning the game, Uruguay was eliminated from the competition.
This time, Luis Suarez cried on the sidelines after Uruguay was eliminated from the World Cup despite a 2-0 win over Ghana on Friday.
The result also put Ghana out of the competition.
Suarez played a key role in both first-half goals scored by Giorgian De Arrascaeta, and Uruguay appeared headed for the round of 16 after inflicting more pain on Ghana 12 years after their now-infamous meeting in the quarterfinals at the World Cup in South Africa.
Then, Suarez denied Ghana a winning goal with a deliberate handball on the goal line, and having been sent off, he celebrated wildly on the sidelines when Ghana missed the resultant penalty.
Uruguay was primed to go through in Qatar until South Korea's late goal gave it a 2-1 win over Portugal in the other Group H game. That meant Uruguay needed to score one more goal in the dying minutes of its game to qualify. (AP)
