I felt like I should pick up another treatment to offer so I had another string to my bow, so I decided to study Shiatsu. I signed up to the European School of Shiatsu Therapy and Movement, which was fabulous. My teacher Ken Waite had trained in Shiatsu and Martial Arts for 30 years in Japan with 2 other men one from France and one from Israel. When they they went back to their home countries they set up their own schools. We would spend Easters in the centre in Israel and summers at the retreat centre in France. Meeting up with the other students year after year was fun. I loved this course, we studied Chinese medicine, shiatsu, martial arts and zen meditation. We were expected to get into the habit of 20 minutes daily quiet zen meditation.
I also happened to live with 2 leading yoga teachers in London. They had been studying yoga in India with Pattabhi Jois and would do a 2 hour daily home yoga practice! They would often stay longer in relaxation and have a nap. I learnt a lot from them about yogic lifestyles and loved going to their classes and being their massage therapist on their yoga retreats. I accompanied them to to their retreat centre outside London and we took a group to an island off Sweden and to south of India.They drummed in the importance of a daily yoga practice. To be honest I felt so good doing yoga everyday often twice a day on the retreats, that I wanted to keep it up. Their style of yoga was ashtanga which is very different from what I had been doing. Much more dynamic, but I enjoyed the challenge. I was adjusting to the work load of being a busy massage therapist and found the yoga and mediation every day extremely beneficial at keeping me injury free and energised.
So the seed of a committed daily yoga practice was planted.
I probably didn't do yoga every day as it was an hour long session at least and the 20 mins meditation as well but I tried my best and certainly did it most day. I was in my early twenties so still out partying with my friends and sister at the weekends which were particularly exhausting as they were the busiest days as well work wise. But I had picked up a new habit and could see the benefits and was determined to keep it up.
I have come the full circle and now and am keen to share my knowledge and experience and encourage people to develop a daily routine that works for them to balance body and mind.
Which is why I like to run my Free 5 Day Challenges to help people get started and feel the benefits themselves. So yes… it’s time to finally admit I’m leaving! After 21 amazing years in London I will be off to sunnier parts in January. A huge adventure into the unknown but let’s see what happens!!!
I’m not sure of our leaving date yet because it’s down to the visa process via my partner’s work so as soon as I know I will post an update! It’s totally out of my hands so until I can say more, I am closing my diary from new year.
