Thanks to conservation efforts and its remote location, the Cocos Island Hope Spot is home to some of the best conserved ecosystems in marine tropical waters.

The healthy population of top predators makes Cocos Island one of the most important sites in the Eastern Tropical Pacific for taking action to protect large migratory species, including a variety of shark and ray species.

🏝🐠🐠🐠📸GGD

Can you guess Nat Geo Explorer in Residence Enric Sala’s favorite shark? 🦈

“There are so many beautiful sharks! Hammerheads are distinctive, and tiger sharks are so powerful and elegant. But my heart beat the fastest when a whale shark (which at 15 meters long, is the largest shark in the ocean) swam right past me near Cocos Island in Costa Rica.”
